Athletic Boosters Golf Outing Sets Fundraising Record
Minooka High School, Channahon Junior High bring in funding for both their sports programs at annual golf outing.
Despite the dragging economy and soaring temperatures, the Athletic Boosters Golf Outing Monday set a record for fundraising.
“It’s going to be a record-setting year for us,” said Dave Landahl, treasurer of the Minooka Community Athletic Boosters, at the start of the 8th Annual Golf Boosters Outing.
The event took place at the Heritage Bluffs Golf Course in Channahon.
“Once again the community has stepped up for us," he said.
Landahl was referring to the number of golfers and the amount of money that the boosters were able to raise at this annual benefit. He addressed the shorts and polo-clad crowd, as the temperature was predicted to be in the 90s with humidity forecast high as well.
There were 144 golfers scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m., said Minooka athletic director Bob Tyrell.
Landahl said that the event has never grossed as much money as it did this year, about $42,000.
After expenses, the schools' booster clubs will net about $30,000. That money will be split between the Minooka High School athletic boosters and the Channahon Junior High athletic boosters.
The annual benefit is held in combination with the Channahon Junior High Athletic Booster Club.
“Fifty percent of the high school athletic funding comes from this event. And eighty percent of the Channahon Junior High athletic funds come from this event,” Landahl said.
The event has a shot-gun start, with all players beginning at the same time but at different holes. Although some golfers surely came out for the love of the game, others came to support the cause.
“I’m supporting my grandkids’ schools,” golfer Larry Wiers said as he teed off with a foursome of friends and family.
Once the carts scurried to various holes, the golf games began.
Fundraisers like the one Monday help purchase supplies for sports programs including an audio upgrade for the stadium, cross country and track team tents, wrestling timing clocks, plus all the individual performance awards given annually at the high school.
The Channahon programs have been able to build softball/baseball dugouts, among other things.
