Update: Arrest Made in Gunfire Case on Eastern
Terion Steward has admitted he shot at a car whose passengers were allegedly threatening his friend, but the other suspects remain at large, Joliet police say.
Update/3:50 p.m. Jan. 17:
Terion D. Steward, 19, 460 Water St., Joliet, has been arrested and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with a Tuesday afternoon shooting in the 200 block of North Eastern Avenue.
Cmdr. Rich Demick said officers interviewing residents in the wake of the 3:30 p.m. exchange of gunfire located one witness who said Steward, who was angered by a light blue-colored car that kept circling the block, announced, "If that car drive around here again, I'm going to buck (shoot) at him."
When the car returned, Steward took three shots at the vehicle and someone in the car returned fire, Demick said.
When questioned by police, Steward said the car had stopped a friend of his and he observed his friend put up his arms, as if being robbed, Demick said. Steward said he fired his gun in order to protect his friend, he said.
Steward told police he did not know the identities of the people in the blue car.
Original story/10 p.m. Jan. 16:
Joliet police have no suspects in what appears to have been an incident in which gunfire was exchanged Tuesday afternoon, Cmdr. Rich Demick said.
Several people contacted police anonymously to report hearing guntshots in the 200 block of Eastern Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. Casings from two different kinds of guns were retrieved, but the suspects were gone by the time officers arrived, Demick said.
Witnesses said they saw a light blue car leave the area, and it seems the other suspect or suspects were on foot, he said.
There were no reports of injuries but a house in the area sustained what police believe was incidental damage, including a bullet that went through a window frame, Demick said.
