Death of South Wilmington Man Under Investigation

The vehicle involved in the single-car crash traveled down an embankment, coming to rest on Interstate 55.

The traffic crash that resulted in the death of a South Wilmington man Wednesday is under investigation, Grundy County Coroner John Callahan said in a written release.

The crash occurred at about 10:30 p.m., Jan. 16 on Goodfarm Road in Goodfarm Township.  Anthony J. Serena, 28, of South Wilmington, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Callahan stated preliminary investigations indicates Serena was eastbound on Goodfarm Road approaching the overpass for Interstate 55 when his pickup truck left the roadway and traveled down an embankment. The vehicle then traveled about 700 feet coming to a rest on I-55. Serena was the only occupant of the vehicle and was ejected from the vehicle.

The crash is being reconstructed by the Illinois State Police and the coroner’s office was assisted at the scene by Gardner/Dwight Fire Department.

The crash remains under investigation by Callahan’s Office, Grundy County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Police.
