Don't Forget to Honor Your Assistant

April 24-30 is Administrative Professionals Week.

Kathy Dolosic, who is in charge of contractor training at Joliet Junior College attended a lunch Monday with her daughter Stephanie Matthews.

The two women were not celebrating Mother's Day. Instead, they were guests for a lunch to celebrate administrative professionals. April 24 to 30 is set aside as Administrative Professionals Week. On Monday, members of the Contractors Association of Will and Grundy Counties honored its administrative professional members.

"We're all part of the construction industry or service industry, so it's important to take the people who help us out and thank them," said Mike Adler, secretary/treasurer of the Contractor's Association and owner of Adler Roofing and Sheet Metal.

This is the fifth year for the luncheon.

"We started out with a chocolate luncheon," said Mary Ellis Metz, office manager for the association. "I honestly believe I got more out of this than any other year."

Metz credited speaker Linda Herrick with making that difference. Herrick, who owns her own business, Alternative Soulutions in Plainfield and teaches at Joliet Junior College, spoke about our bodies' hidden language. Herrick is a Reiki master-teacher and told attendees that energy can get trapped in our bodies and cause issues.

"What we're designed to do is experience things," she said. "You have a thought, experience the thought, let it go; you have a feeling, experience it and let it go."

We get into trouble when the experience or feeling is one we avoid experiencing, Herrick added.

Herrick also talked about how we even have jargon in our everyday lives those feelings. For example, calling someone a pain in the neck or saying that someone has caused heartache. Additionally, the phrases making my blood boil or I want to pull my hair out are energy-based phrases.

This resonated with Matthews.

"All her little words at the end, I said today, 'you're guys are going to make me pull my hair out of my head,'" she said.

Her mother, Dolosic, who is a Shorewood resident, took away some inspiration.

"With positive thinking, you can make your life a whole lot easier," she said.

The Contractors' Association of Will and Grundy Counties has been around since 1933. The luncheon was held at Al's Steakhouse in Joliet.
