Update: Fatal Crash in Channahon on Sunday

Car leaves Interstate 55, landing in the lot near Mugz's.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O'Neal has released the name of the man who died as a result of injuries suffered in an accident on Interstate 55 on Sunday. James Vanderweide, of Bourbonnais, died Sunday after his vehicle left Interstate 55 and landed under the bridge in a parking lot.

Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said sometime between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday, the car left the roadway and landed in the lot.

"It was found by a resident of the marina," he said.

The resident noticed the car in the lot and thought it had been abandon. When the resident approached the vehicle, though, he found a person inside. The man was pronounced dead on arrival.

Wold said a number of people live on their boats in the marina during the summer.

Police investigation revealed the vehicle left Interstate 55 in an area between the southbound and northbound lanes, just before the bridge. There is no guardrail in that area.
