Update: Man Dies After Being Hit by Semi

The accident happened between the U.S. 30 and U.S. 52 exits. Illinois State Police have identified the man as Gregory Noe of Joliet.

Updated at 9:40 p.m.

A pedestrian who was hit by a semi-truck on Interstate 55 was pronounced dead shortly after 12 p.m., the Will County Coroner's office reported Thursday night.

Illinois State Police identified the man as 40-year-old Gregory Noe of Joliet. Police said Noe was standing in the right lane outside his parked vehicle on southbound I-55 between Route 30 and Route 52 in Plainfield Township when he was struck by a semi.

The crash happened at 11:43 a.m. when the semi, driven by 57-year-old Albert Vera of Carpentersville, was also traveling in the right lane.

Shortly after the accident, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Martez Malone said the pedestrian was taken to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center by Plainfield Fire Department ambulance with serious injuries.

Police said it's unclear why Noe was standing in the traffic lane. A crash investigation is ongoing.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, according to the coroner's office.

Had to be a pretty new driver. I hope he stopped. I only say this because a truck driver with alot of years under his belt is always looking because you don't know what could happen. I hope and pray the man is ok and they find out who he is.

Yes, Valorie he did stop. Your comment is ignorant in the sense that just because the truck driver hit the man does not mean he wasn't paying attention or becuase he was a "new" driver. Do you know where the man was standing? Do you know if it was to late for the driver to stop? You probably get all your information from the patch. Also they did find out who the man was. Its in the article you "read".

Maybe the guy wanted to kill himself. If so he sure picked a hell of a way to do it.

When I drove past I saw there was a semi and about 3 cars parked on the side of the roadway. There was a man lying on his stomach toward the right shoulder with people around him. At that time there were no police there, it must have just happened minutes earlier. The poor guy died. Give him his peace!

I was the second person on the scene. He was still alive, but his breathing was sporadic and shallow. His car was about 2 inches on the correct side of the white line. I almost clipped his car as I went around the curve. His car was stalled out with the hood up. I think that he went to look under the hood and as he came out from in front of the car, he was struck. The semi driver told me that he just " came out in the road all of a sudden." May God rest his soul.

Please remember that Greg's friends, family, and children may be reading this. Please use discretion. Thank you.

The driver has many years as a truck driver. The man walked out into on coming traffic and stood in front of the truck. Another trucker actually heard it over the radio and informed the police that the man who was hit had been on the other side of the road acting out of sort just a short while earlier.

I do not believe that anyone is blaming Albert, the driver of the truck. My thoughts go out to him, as he has to deal with this accident as well. I again ask that people use discretion. I don't think that any person would like the worst day of their life broadcast for the world to see. Regardless of the events leading up to the accident, Greg's family just lost a son, a husband, and a father. I don't know that we need to discuss the details of their loss. I realize that freedom of speech is everyone's right. I also think that it is right to be respectful and compassionate to those left to grieve. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.

Please don't give truckers a bad rap. Things happen. A semi weighing thousands and thousands of pounds can't stop on a dime. Experienced driver or not. It was a tragic accident and a terrible spot to be stalled. God needed His Angel home and he took him home. We don't get to choose how we go or even our destiny. That man is in Heaven and we should be respectful of his grieving family. God bless Gregory and his family.

trucker1990, You have no idea what happened either! I just hope that someday when you die that people are much kinder to the family that you have left behind!
