Plainfield Man Charged With DUI, Seriously Injured in I-55 Accident

The crash shut down Interstate 55 in both directions Tuesday night.

A 24-year-old Plainfield resident was airlifted to the hospital and charged with driving under the influence after a crash on Interstate 55 near Shorewood closed all lanes of the highway for a period Tuesday night.

The crash happened at 10:25 p.m. on Interstate 55 South, a half-mile north of Route 52, Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Bill Fuentes said. A passenger car rear-ended a tractor-trailer, then struck the center median.

Elijah D. Amant, 24, of Plainfield, remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was airlifted Tuesday night.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center. His name and condition were not available.

State Police said there was initially a small engine fire in one of the vehicles, but that it had extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.

"There was no fire when we got there," Troy Fire Protection District Chief Steve Engledow said. "It was out when we got there. ... When we got there it was a definite pin-in with heavy extrication."

Plainfield Fire Protection District and Troy Fire Protection District both responded to the crash.

Amant was charged with DUI and additional charges could be pending, police said.

All lanes of I-55, both northbound and southbound, were blocked while fire and police personnel responded to the crash. Officials could not say what time the interstate reopened.

Steve... You didn't say anything wrong! You are not speaking as someone who is just reading this article, you were there! No matter what is happening in somebody's life it doesn't give them the right to hop into a vehicle and risk every other persons life on the road! My prayers go out to him and his family for their recovery, but it doesn't make it OK that it happened to begin with!

NOBODY is saying it is ok!!!!!!! But why name call? How old are we? 10???? We are all adults here (I hope) Do you PERSONALLY know this man? NO!!! What if he had any mental illness and wasn't thinking clearly???? Would you blame him then? All I asked is everyone just STOP & think..... What if this happened to someone YOU loved.... Would you STILL say the same things publically??? NO!!! So come on, work WITH eachother.... NOT tear eachother down!!!

Pam...how ignorant of you to say you have experience with people "using mental illness to commit crimes". And also to think that calling someone an idiot isn't passing judgement. May God have mercy on your bitter soul.

You cannot use it as an excuse to make it ok! Whether or not you have a mental illness, is not an excuse! That is all I am saying! You are the bitter one for wasting your time and energy here instead of where it should be... Helping this young man...

It is very sad that this has taken this kind of tone. Everyone has cursed someone out who has cut them off or has driven erratically! Nobody is perfect the difference is we take responsibility and admit when we are wrong. Instead of apologizing for the action we are a blaming society full of excuses. You can be a good person and commit a horrible act, it doesn't mean you are a bad person always... you can argue all you want... at that moment, it was stupidity!

It doesn't sound like he was using his best judgement Steve, but he is still loved by so many people and they are all hoping and praying for him to overcome this. Try being respectful, regardless of how you feel, because he is a son, a father, a friend, and so much more to the people that love him.

Because I knew how stupid this was I was just waiting for someone to say negative things about him. People make mistakes and hopefully this will be a wakeup call for him but he doesn't need ANYONE trash talking his poor decision, all he needs at this very moment is prayers that he survives. He is very lucky that he didn't die and that no one else did either but he is still fighting for his life, and it is not like he is just going to walk away from this with his hands clean. He will have a lot of recovery and scars to remind him of this for the rest of his life. As the article stated he got a DUI and is facing other charges. Drinking and driving is serious and so is speeding, but let's not bicker and dwell, let us be thankful that no lives we lost and keep those that need us in our positive thoughts and prayers. Mookey I'm so sorry, I can't imagine what you are going thru, I'm here if you wana text or call me.

I feel bad for the trucker and all of us that were sitting in the 55 parking lot that night. Not for the drunk driving tho. I know you all are gonna hate on me and talk back but I don't really care. All these kids these days think they are invincible when it comes to drinking and driving and do not take other people's lives into account. If this kid does pull through and live he needs to spend some time in prison. Maybe if it was next to impossible to get your life back after a dui people wouldn't be out on the roads shit faced. But hey it is what it is and it is not like there are a lack of people. The planet could stand to lose a few hundered million people at the least.

Ok ENOUGH!!!!!! I do not know Eli, but I do know some of his good friends. Look, to everyone who thinks they can cast a judgement.... WOW... it must be great being perfect your whole life!!!! I thought only God was perfect..... Stop and THINK before you post something horrible on here.. This IS the internet & all commenst stay forever. A family is in pain right now & the last thing they need to read is someone putting in their two cents JUSt because they feel the need to look down on someone. Everyone makes mistakes & nobody is perfect. So, let's all be civil & peaceful & instead of cutting this poor guy down, let's be positive & wish him & his loved ones all the best..... Lord knows he is in enough pain..... Hopefully he makes it through. Sending love & thoughts to the family!!!

@ Steve..... I see how upset you are & I am sure it is due to either something you did in your past or something bad that has happened to someone in your life. With that said...... Jail is a horrible place to be in, it actuallly makes people harder & doesn't really do anything positive. Maybe you should say instead of jail, volunteer at MADD and see what effects this has on the lives of others......
That would have a more possitive response/reaction & most likely make an impact on this guy...... Ok, enough said.... Just please STOP all the negativity!!!

OK everyone!!!!!! This is in no way shape or form helping the situation!! I dont know this young man nor anyone involved. I do know that no one & I mean no one is perfect!! People all over the world take a risk getting behind the wheel of a car when they'v had too much to drink...how about blame sharing whoever let him get in his car to drive in the condition he was in.. I'm sure he wasnt drinking alone!! I see all the time people will put others in a vehicle or even on a motorcycle to let them go! Sorry Steve that you had to sit in traffic for a bit while the accident was cleaned up...while sitting there you could'v been the bigger person & said a prayer for all involved instead of getting on here & bashing him! Being it was Valentines Day did you go out for dinner or other & have a few drinks & get in your car & drive? Most likely half the traffic was in that state! Now go about your day & hopefully you can find that you should be thankful it was not you or anyone you know & say a prayer for only & I mean ONY God knows why this happened!!! My prayers go out to the young man his family & friends.............

First off NO I didn't go out to have some drinks. I was on my way home from work when this moron decided to do what he did{well leave it at that}. Second I will say a prayer for nobody as I am a athiest. It's quite funny tho how everyone is giving excuses for what he did, and then offer up prayers. Drunken Fool is right too send these drunk drivers to jail, let em get a little POKE N' STROKE and feel the pain they caused everyone including thier family. But no someone else is always at fault for the "mistake" he made. So sick of drunk drivers and the people that stand up for them.

Okay..... I was the first person on the scene.... I ran to find that fire extinguisher. I sprinted to call the police. I helped direct traffic. My friend was the one that broke the glass and helped get the blood out of his mouth so he could breathe. I was one of the cars that were passed by this kids impala ss... If i hadn't scooped from the left lane to the center lane when i did, my 3 friends and i would be most certainly critical or dead. I also got the entire footage on film.. I do not sympathize for this kid... I sympathize for his family that he has put through this but in no way does the fact that his "one brief lack in judgement" justify the justice this kid should face. Community service, major driving school and AA meetings... Massive fines and fees are a good start. If he had struck my car and hurt anyone of my friends I'd sew him for everything he had. No sympathy for him... Just his family.

Where were all these family and friends who are defending a drunk driver as somebody who "made a mistake", when he needed a ride home? Driving drunk is not a new issue that is just coming out and should not be treated as "just a mistake". Forgetting to file your income taxes for 5 years is a "mistake".Or is it?

Yes your aloud to speak your mind thats called the freedom of speech. But do this kind of trash talking somewhere else show respect and class. All of you please stop and realize who this is actually hurting and takiing focus away from. Elijah needs help, and we all must listen and be there for him because will Love him. Remember NO one is perfect except for your {our} GOD. We all somewhere have made mistakes big and small people do get second chances and sometimes even more. Wow!!! Where are all the adults? I searched for this accident online because I helped put the engine fire out and I wanted to know if the guy in the car was ok. I never expected this kind of "discussion". It's good to know he's out of the hospital and God help him learn a lesson from this. Thankfully no-one else was hurt, so why argue about what might have been? Might I add that calling someone an idiot isn't passing judgement...if you're going off what Scripture says then we are not to judge a person's worth. Name calling doesn't fit that bill. I called him and idiot or worse when I was doing 70 and he flew past me like I was standing still. Also, prison time, or the threat of it, really doesn't stop anyone from doing anything so, tho I'm sure he's going to get at least jail time, fines and AA or whatever, it's up to him to take that time to change for better or worse. Thanks to the truck driver who helped with the fire, thanks to the guy that used the u-bolt to break out the window and get into the car, and thanks to those who helped keep the guy breathing. Everyone did what common decency calls for and that gives me some small hope for this seemingly more and more God-forsaken country of ours.
