Shorewood Driver Crashes Through School Building
Initial reports indicate that the driver passed out behind the wheel and hit Walnut Trails Elementary School.
No children were injured Wednesday afternoon when a car crashed through an exterior wall at Walnut Trails Elementary School in Shorewood.
"We're just grateful there were no children in the building at the time," Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said.
Ordinarily, the kindergarten classroom would have between 20 and 25 children in it.
The accident happened Wednesday afternoon and Gegenheimer said police told him that the driver had gone into a coma.
Shorewood Police Commander Eric Allen confirmed.
"A 37-year-old driver went into a diabetic seizure or coma," he said. "(She) drove through a yard at Parkside and Hunter and through an open field (and into) Walnut Trails School.
"There were no passengers in the car and there were no kids in school, thankfully."
The driver, whose name was not released, but who is a Shorewood resident, was taken to the hospital. Her condition was not available, but Allen said she was stable when she was transported.
Gegenheimer said the school was working to repair the building.

Maybe you just want to find the humor in things. But, in all honesty this is my son's classroom and he would have been in class that day. The thought of what would have happened had they been in class that day was horrific.

Was it bad, yes. Think of the teacher that has to refill her classroom full of supplies, books, and materials. Think of everything that the students lost. Humor is not called for in a situation like this.
