State to Require New Vaccinations for 6th-12th Graders: What Do You Think?

Do you think the state of Illinois should require students to receive the Tdap whooping cough booster shot in order to remain in school?

The Illinois State Board of Health has approved new recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health and The Illinois Department of Education to require all students in sixth grade through senior year of high school to have an additional vaccination.

The students will now need to show proof of receiving the Tdap booster shot. The vaccine immunizes against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.

“We’ve seen an increase in pertussis, or whooping cough, in Illinois during the last six years. Medical experts have found whooping cough has been on the rise in pre-teens and teens, indicating a waning immunity from infant and childhood immunizations,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck in a press release.

Last year, Illinois required sixth and ninth grade students to receive the vaccine.

Students must either show proof of having received this vaccination, must have an appointment to get the vaccine or have an approved medical or religious exemption on file.

Students who do not meet one of these three conditions by Oct. 15, 2013, will not be allowed to attend school until they do.

For the sixth and ninth graders who already got the vaccine, they do not need to get another shot, but do need to show proof of being vaccinated previously.

Information provided by the Illinois State Board of Education

Do you think the state of Illinois should be telling us how to vaccinate our children? Do you think it’s fair that those who refuse vaccinations will not be allowed to attend school? Tell us in the comments section.

A new vaccine really and what are the side affects and lets be honest if Illinois would loose the slogan "come all who seek welfare illegal immigrants who want a drivers license all those who want free housing food stamps...we have millions who will work and support you" I mean we bring this stuff on ourselves when we don't pay attention who the welfare stamps and healthcare are going to..

I understand that pertussis is on the rise, but why is the vaccine combined with tetanus and diphtheria? Pertussis is not something to mess around with, so why can't the vaccine contain just that one? We immunize, but my daughter didn't need boosters (doctor even told me they are medically unnecessary-we had her titers drawn and they proved she didn't need the boosters.) I'm for immunization. I'm against OVER-immunization.

Yes, absolutely. Too many parents don't vaccinate their children, last year my 5-month-old and 3-year-old got pertussis because too many kids aren't vaccinated. Herd immunity does NOT work if children aren't vaccinated. If anyone disagrees, come on over to my house and I'll make sure to have my kids cough all over your kids. Then you will know how scary it is.

If your 5 mo and 3 yr old were vaccinated, how did they get pertussis? If the vaccine is effective, you shouldn't get the disease no matter what other people do. This whole idea that the vaccine is only effective if everyone gets it is total crap. If the vaccine doesn't protect you from getting the disease from others, what is the point?

Guess my kids can't come over huh? Mine are not vaccinated and have not been sick in years...my 8 year old has never even seen an antibiotic....we live a normal life but choose fresh veggies and fruit, no vaccines, raw milk and we don't ever get sick. Call us crazy but God gave you the tools for a health sick free life...you just have to choose them. I'm with nsmith if your kids were vaccinated how do they get sick it's supposed to make them immune to it right? Not! Before people knock others for not doing immunizations maybe you should do some research and look at the stats....oh that's right nobody thinks for themselves anymore and listens to the government for advice.....look how that's working people. Do yourself a favor and your kids....eat healthy and pray...you would be better off in the end for sure.

Cynthia,

That is actually not true. When an outbreak in Iowa effects more vaccinated people than non vaccinated then that is real data. You are wrong on the veggies sorry to say....do reading on fermented foods and veggies and fruit....I have seen first hand it cure cancer....my husband being one of them because he grew up with a mother feeding him dry milk and canned foods and that was the only diet...no veggies. God gave us the means to be healthy but it's your choice whether you do it or not. Go ahead and stay with your processed food and shots....lets see where that takes you. When I see 23 year olds by thousands going to the Dr. for an 80 year old disease RA that's a problem. Like others have said do your research....watch the ones on clean food and lifestyle thrive.

The problem too, is too many parents don't leave their children home when sick! And, LAZY parents not making their kids wash their hands. There is too many antibiotics handed out like candy on Halloween, and too many people telling you to do this and do that. I can see getting some of the basic immunizations, but your body has an immune system! My house is perfect example of the flu shot not working. We all got the shot in October. In December, we all tested positive for influenza "A". Someone in the CDC failed to foresee a certain strain out there. I don't know what to believe anymore!

How many people are willing to eat right, stay home when sick or treat their illnesses the correct way and not mandating booster shots on the others.

The US spends 2 1/2 times on health care, compared to other wealthy nations!! Yet we rank 10th in the mortality rate. Americans think there is a pill or a shot to cure anything. Maybe there's a vaccine for obesity??? If we would quit eating all the fast, and processed food we would be healthier. We have time to get vaccines, but not time to prepare healthy meals. Most vaccines are only 20% effective, and you do have the risk of getting sick for whatever your getting vaccinated for.

20%? Cite that statistic. Actually, I'd settle for even one example of a vaccine that is 20% effective.

Denise Williams

According to the CDC, the TDap vaccine is not 100% effective. Previously, 5 shots were recommended, with the final dose to be at 11-12 years of age. Given that it is not 100% effective, given that it's overall effectiveness is directly related to how many of the recommended doses a child has had, it is of paramount importance that everyone be vaccinated to reduce the probability of infecting a child who has not yet had all their doses.

In addition, since more and more people are not getting vaccinated or are receiving only part of the full doses, the strains that are now being seen are more virulent and able to overcome even those systems who have received the previously recommended course. Just like the overuse of antibiotics has caused resistant strains of bacteria, underuse of vaccines has caused stronger strains of pertussis and other diseases.

Many people are not vaccinating due to religious beliefs. Many vaccines are made from aborted fetus tissue and many religions forbid injecting anything that contains this tissue. wwwvaccinationnews.com.

The schools have to allow your children to attend due to religious beliefs. Do some research and you'll find that this state can not make your child get vaccinated before they enter school. You can also speak to an attorney who speacializes in this area and you'll find out your rights as a parent. I had 2 neighbors whose children never had vaccines and entered our public school system.

Take the advice of a chiropractor and a discredited 1998 report or the CDC, the AMA, The WHO and reputable doctors, scientists and researchers all over the world...hmm. Tough decision.

Fact-the number of children who died in the decades before vaccinations far outstrips the number of children who actually have serious adverse reactions to vaccines.

for some reason people seem to forget that humans were around millions of years before vaccines..yes there was disease but there wasn't an over population of humans either...like today..how many vaccines are there...And how many diseases still exist tha these vaccines were supposed to stop people from getting..And who has been getting sick?....BOTH..vaccinated people and non vaccinated people...The flu shot the CDC says was only about 60 percent effective..Thats to me is still a 50/5 shot...because you know at 50% we all would of known that the Vaccine companies are full of crap..most people think it was a vaccine that stopped the Plauge..the plague would of still been here had people not learned to wash their hands..and to do so before, during and after surgeries....cleanliness is what stopped the plague..quarantine from others when sick, not going to work or school with the flu helps out too,how many people still at work or school sick and knowing they should not be there but do anyways...well dependency on money, truancy laws stop people from keeping sick kids out of schools for long periods of time..your kid misses a week for the flu and youll have the cops at your door, along with DCFS...

There is a rise in pertussis precisely because the vaccine does not work (even in populations where 90+% of the population are vaccinated (look up the California outbreaks). This is a scam with an obvious profit-motive (how much $ does the pharma industry contribute to our policy makers? If you think that doesn't affect policy decisions, you are extremely naive), and there are significant risks that go along with vaccines, especially DTap. Check out the VAERS data--please educate yourselves before spouting uninformed opinions. Additionally, if mothers would breastfeed as long as possible, they will pass natural pertussis antibodies to their babies to protect baby when the family encounters this and other diseases in their communities. Follow the money people--stop being sheeplings.

So wait, let me get this straight. According to half the people on this thread, we should go back 150 years to the time when we used to raise our own food, eat only unprocessed foods and live the healthy life, shunning all modern medicine?
And live to the ripe old age of 50, if we're lucky? Often times dieing from simple things like abscessed teeth, the common cold or a simple infection?
No thanks, I'll take my chances with modern medicine and good sized chunk of moderation in everything else.

People don't die from the common cold, if you don't take care of your teeth and get an abscess that is your problem. Why would you die from a simple infection? If you get cut, wash it and keep it clean, then you don't have to worry about an infection. Simple hygiene practices can save a lot of heartache for you.
Are you incapable of having a garden? You can grow a large amount of the veggies you consume. Buy better quality meat. Don't eat all the processed junk that is offered at the store. Yes, it is more expensive, but you will save on your medical costs. Exercise and eat well, the key to a healthy lifestyle.

RG,
Did you even read, or better yet, comprehend, what I wrote?
Why do you think people died of such simple things back in the day? Do you not think that they could have simply washed their hands, and brushed their teeth?
Or do you also eschew the use of soap and toothpaste (they have antimicrobial agents and chemicals in them, you know.)
And yes, I have a very nice little garden that I tend annually. We don't eat all of the crap that is available. In fact, we are a very healthy family, frequent users of the local YMCA fitness center. We do not, however, turn our backs on modern medicine. it has it's place in society.

I have done my research, e tensile research, long before the Internet was even connected, and now because the Internet is connected. I've seen way to much regarding vaccines and the detrimental affects. I have seen children die, I have seen children be disabled permanently for the rest of their lives.
The truth is, no matter how small the amount...
Mercury,
Aluminum
Formaldehyde
Aborted fetal cells
And the list goes on...not ethical, it's toxic sludge, it's criminal to inject your healthy baby with, and the bottom line is...I don't vaccinate my children for the exact same reasons you do vaccinate yours!!! As a Christian, the unethical choice regarding conscience and aborted fetal cells injected into my children, is deplorable to say one must inject toxins I to the healthy to achieve a healthy response. In implies one can't think critically any more and have become enslaved to the industry and they even defend those who are the one doing the harm. The pharmaceutical company. Are you do p,steely ignorant to the facts regarding g the rise of every type of cancer, the perpetually unhealthy generation coming up, the deaths from vaccines...you must not be, because you are defending it so well. As I stated before, the glory in it all, is that it's a personal choice that no one can take away from the parent. We who don't vax, at first feel sorry for your children who are taken to a Dr. Way more often than should be, and forced by your own sign of a waiver to inject your precious gift with cancer virus. Just living in your homes have chemicals that we all breath in on a daily basis. Formaldehyde in cabinets, siding and insulation to VOC's in paint and stain. How about that refrigerator we all have in our homes or the piping that's delivering your water from the street. Just by collecting your mail each day you're exposed to chemicals on some level. The new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the vaccine offered 58 percent protection against the most common and dangerous H3N2 strain for children ages 6 months to 17 years old, 46 percent protection for adults ages 18 to 49, and 50 percent protection for adults 60 to 64 years of age.

However, for seniors 65 and older, this year's flu shot was found to be only 9 percent effective against the more virulent H3N2 strain, the report showed.

Overall, the flu vaccine was found to be 56 percent effective at reducing the need for medical visits caused by the illness. That's around the initial 62 percent effectiveness figure the CDC reported in January based on early test results collected from 1,155 children and adults who went to doctors with respiratory infections.
