Stateville Prison Laid Low by Flu-Like Virus

Norovirus, a highly contagious illness, is the same one that often strikes cruise ships.

A particularly contagious form of a stomach flu-like virus has struck Stateville Correctional Center, and now as many as 140 inmates are sick and bed-ridden.

The illness is has been identified as Norovirus, Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman Melaney Arnold told CBS 2 (WBBM-TV). Inmates began getting sick Christmas Day, with many people becoming ill simultaneously.

“The Department of Corrections and the Department of Public Health have already started working on outbreak and control efforts,” Arnold told the television news station.

The illness is best known for sickening people on cruise shops. Because it is so contagious, it can spread quickly. Typically, however, it only takes a day or two to run its course, experts say.

To keep it from spreading at the Crest Hill prison, inmates who have fallen ill are being segregated from the rest of the prison population, the story said.

Atleast they are eating more than some people on the outside. Oh n look free medical for them. We pay for everything and they get medical food and housing. The only Ones at that place that I feel sorry for are the employees. Hope they don't get sick.

just to let you know Steve, their "free cable" tv is paid for by the inmates loved ones who pay for the exorbitant prices that the commissary charges for our loved ones to get toiletries, tv`s, any kind of food product etc. The extra monies go for cable tv. Before people start tooting their horns the should really know the facts!!! By the way, the food that is served is green, undercooked, and full of bugs, and that's another fact. and as far as medical attention goes, the drs there are lackeys and the guards couldn't care less if the inmate is lying on the floor writhing with pain or actually dying. Those are facts!

Wow what a rough bunch..lol This is the system which we have chosen.you can not just execute all the inmates...like countries that hardly have no riots in their prisons which put these guards in jeopardy have said... "Being sent to prison was the punishment, keeping them from the free world, from family, from doing as you please & exercising your free will..loss of that is the punishment"."..To punish people that were punished by being sent to prison you only cause chaos and more murder and to do so is just torture and that not what prisons are paid to do their paid to house prisoners"

Eye for an eye leaves everybody blind..we have all done something's worthy of losing an eye...just think if you would have...funny to see but if people's family members were sent to prison for too many DUI's and never hurt a soul and was treated bad or came out half dead these same people would be the ones encouraging their loved ones to sue the shit out of Statesville...trying to get on the news, papers,Internet just to tell the story...it's all good until its someone you love that messed up and ended up in there...

Well, you do realize that some of the people in the prison system commit these crimes to get food and medical because they can't get any help for anyone else. Just because a person is in prision or county jail doesn't mean they are bad people some have made the wrong choices sure but, some couldn't afford to pay their court fines and again some can't get a decent job that will offer insurance or even enough money to pay court fines because they are trying to pay rent for a place to at least live instead of out on the street. Before you judge know the facts.

Yep the guy who robbed the bank for a dollar and waited for the police, the guy who destroyed Speedway here on Briggs street said it was because he was out in the cold with nothing.....
We bicker who gets what from the government because of unequal division of benefits when we give "Illegals" help and not the "American" now we have race vs race and neighbor vs neighbor which causes chaos,...as we sit and say nothing and did nothing when a man named Ron Paul was telling everyone that foreign aid takes away from people here getting healthcare, food, shelter free and so does the trillions we spent on the "War on drugs" each year like 450,000,000 we just sent Mexico and the gift to the Muslim Brotherhood at 450,000,000 we gave them...and the fact that we are taxed for life to provide "Free healthcare"to Iraq & Afghanistan for life...a never ending contract...and what do our politicians do?...they have a healthcare debate to take more money from you to make you pay for healthcare...Why?..Control.....How do you do that?....Debit,unequal distribution,...which cause chaos and more laws to be put into place..which cause more people to be locked up...and now with private prisons it is going to very profitable for owners, investors to petition to congress to ask for harsher punishments for crimes to get more people locked up,a kid stealing a candy bar gets you a felony and a year in the detention..lol were heading for some darker days that's for sure...

You are very correct,it is better for some to give up freedom for sake of security,food,shelter,healthcare...and like Benjamin Franklin said it you do this you deserve neither freedom nor security...Like Ron Paul said ...Igiving up personal liberty for sake of security..just will not work...and they both are right...Prison is no easy thing..a lot of bad things can happen to you in there...so in reality they gave up freedom and liberty for sake of food, shelter and healthcare but in reality have no security from each other.....

Education: the government says "No medical benefits to marijuana" but own pattent number (6630507) which states that marijuana has no medical value..Know what? Someone the people in Statesville are in there for marijuana..as we have 2 states that have now legalized it...the 450,000,0000 we just sent to Mexico was to fight the war on drugs...Did you also know that the "Funding"for the "War on Drugs" is taken out of the same account as healthcare, food assistance, and shelter assistance? Know who they did that? Using public account to save the public from the public that's how...
The wars: since we invaded the 2 countries we provide free healthcare, weapons, food, shelter funding to show good faith..You must not be paying attention to all the details of the war..that are costing people here and will for life...But just remember this all of the money spent is why there are not other ways to deal with prisoners..there is no funding for experiments, different facilities,or be able to run different programs that one day might actually help someone..it is being drained from the wars, war on drugs and foreign aid...but ignore the facts we will just keep on wondering why prisoners are not getting rehabbed, and why we keep on having repeat offenders, some because lack of education and some for lack of necessities...and wondering why they are like this..because we are broke and spending money on things we need not to leaving people here is and shape..Everything plays a part in this.

Oops patent number (6630507) states marijuana has numerous medical benefits...hate auto correct ..lol but some of the people in prisons are in there for marijuana....and it's not just marijuana..it's the point I am trying to make..some people are locked up for some pretty dumb shit and do not deserve to be punished while being punished..that's torture...being taken from society losing freedom and liberty is punishment

Truth hurts! John Roberts is just telling it like it is. Humans are humans and yes I think a lot of views would be different if you had a loved in that place. Gravedigger is just a name caller. Just because you voice your view doesn't make you any more unintelligent than the next.

I think the laws and the prison system need an overview and overhaul. All punishments don't always fit the crime.
