The Will County clerk's office counted the remaining provisional ballots Tuesday morning, but they did not alter the outcome of the April 9 Joliet City Council election.
Hundreds of provisional ballots were added to the vote count Tuesday, but the outcome remained the same as election night: Mike Turk and Jan Quillman will be returning to their at-large Joliet City Council seats, Don Fisher will not. The final tally added 366 votes to Fisher's numbers from April 9, giving him a total of 5,078 votes, according to Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots, who oversaw the counting of the ballots that could not be verified on election day or came in by mail after the vote. However, Turk received an additional 383 votes, Quillman an additional 403 and council newcomer Jim McFarland an additional 598. The retired Will County Sheriff's Office deputy chief said his well-rounded law enforcement background makes him a strong candidate in the March 2014 primary.
Nick Ficarello is the first candidate to formally announce plans to run in the 2014 election to succeed Paul Kaupas as Will County sheriff. Ficarello, who retired as a deputy chief in 2009 after working for the sheriff's office for 32 years, released a statement announcing he will be a Republican candidate for the county's top law enforcement job. Candidates cannot start circulating election petitions until November to run in the March 18 primary. According to the release, Ficarello discussed his plans at the April 18 Will County Republican Central Committee meeting. District residents said no to a proposal to increase taxes and build a new $21 million library.

Shorewood-Troy Library district residents voted nearly 4-to-1 Tuesday against a referendum that would have boosted the tax bill for the average district homeowner by about $215 a year. Incumbent Patrick Brennan ran a lap around challenger Jacqueline McKinney in the race to retain his seat as Minooka's Village President.
Patrick Brennan started his day with a workout and ended it with a victory lap. Brennan, 71, the incumbent, outpolled 43-year-old challenger Jacqueline McKinney by about a 4-to-1 margin Tuesday in voting for Minooka Village President. Brennan finished with an 813 to 192 edge over McKinney, who four years earlier served on his election campaign committee. Minooka Village President Pat Brennan is seeking a second term, while former Grundy County board member Jacqueline McKinney looks to unseat him in Tuesday's election.
The race for Minooka village president comes down to one between an incumbent pushing for the creation of more new jobs and a challenger with a background in service on the Grundy County board, according to a Sun-Times News Group report. The Joliet City Council candidates spoke at an election forum held this week by the African American and Hispanic Coalition.
Joliet City Council candidate Jim McFarland came out in opposition to any immigrant detention center being built in Joliet, speaking Tuesday at a forum sponsored by the African American & Hispanic Coaltion. “I’m 110 percent against it,” McFarland said, according to a story published by the Joliet Herald News.
