Who? What? Where? When and How?

Three Rivers Library hosts Murder Mystery Party

Please note: The mystery game takes place in 1999.

Welcome to Castle Glenn. This is a popular tourist location in England. A few years ago, it was expanded to a bed-and-breakfast.

The people who visit and the locals enjoy fishing, hunting, looking for lost treasure and ghost-watching. This beautiful castle has been in the Glenn family for many years—656 years, in fact.

“What’s the mystery,” you might ask. Your answer is the following: “Who killed Sir Montgomery Glenn?”

He was found dead in his bedroom with a look of peace on his face. He only looked that way because someone found him beforehand clutching his side, eyes open and crossed!

The night of Friday, July 8, after hours, the Three Rivers Public Library, Minooka Branch hosted a murder mystery party for fifth- through eighth-graders.

The players had some very good (and some silly) accusations, questions and answers. Most children came dressed as their character, which made it easier for everyone (even me!) to decide who they wanted to ask their questions too.

The child who knew their character was guilty was the only player who knew the mystery killer. They were the only person who could lie.

On the table, there were some helpful clues. It said this: “As you are solving the mystery, keep these things in mind: What is the killer’s motive? When could they have done the crime? What is their alibi? What was the killing method? Try to catch the killer in an outright lie!”

The characters included: Chesley Crumb (claustrophobic), Lulu Hudson (likes kids), Jack Milldew (likes birds) Penny Wyze (counts pennies and everything else), Roger Glenn (son of Sir Glenn), Ruther Shott (determined human rights protector and tavern owner in the town of Mousey) and C.D. Bee (likes small things).

More characters include: Andie Spang (just a lady trying to survive), Exinia Escobar (paid to be ahead of everyone), L.Q. St. John (most likely guilty), Paul Killroy (needs to drink more rootbeer and less alcohol), Connie Mann (buys and sells old things), Chris (a woman who gets very distressed around omelets; was Humpty Dumpty a relative?) and “Jack” B. Nimble (poor man).

While the characters tried to solve the crime, they each received their own goblet to use for drinks and a treat of popcorn and chips, all kindly provided by the library staff.

I believe that the tweens and teens had a fun time solving the mystery and made some new friends. The library should do something like this in the winter and for next year’s summer reading program.
