Flooding Forces Evacuation of Hospital Patients

Forty-four patients were being evacuated from Morris Hospital on Thursday afternoon because of safety concerns caused by wide-spread flooding.

Safety concerns stemming from wide-spread flooding led to an evactuation of patients from the main campus at Morris Hospital and Health Care Centers on Thursday afternoon.

Hannah Wehrle, a spokesperson for the hospital, said the evacuation began at 2:30 p.m. and was expected to take 4-6 to complete.

Wehrle said 44 patients were being transferred to four nearby hospitals—Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Presence St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee and Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.

She said all out-patient and elective procedures for Friday (April 19, 2013) have been cancelled at Morris Hospital's main campus, 150 W. High St. Meanwhile, she said the emergency department remains open and is accepting walk-in traffic at the main entrance to the hospital.

Janet Long, the public relations manager at Morris Hospital, said earlier, "We're completely surrounded by water."
