Frightful Fun: Haunted Houses and Other Spooky Attractions around the Area

Looking for some scary fun this weekend before Halloween? Here are some suggestions.

WHAT: Four haunts on three floors, this 20,000 square foot haunt incorporates a historic barn into the house.

WHERE: Dollinger Family Farm, 7420 E. Hansel Road, Channahon

WHEN: 7-10 p.m. Sundays and Thursdays; 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Also open on Halloween.

HOW MUCH: $25 per person

Crest Hill

Statesville Haunted Prison

WHAT: The back story of this years haunt is that the prisoners have rioted, the guards have fled, a darkness has seized control of this maximum security prison and the warden has opened the gates for visitors. The haunt features 23 maximum security cells. After leaving the prison, attendees descend into the city of the dead.

WHERE: Siegal's Cottonwood Farm, 17250 S. Weber Road, Crest Hill

WHEN: Hours vary by day of the week. Click here for details.

HOW MUCH: $30 regular tickets, $40 VIP tickets, $21 for groups of 12 or more on Thursdays only.

Plainfield

Village of Screamfield 

WHAT: This underground village is run by creepy clowns and demonic denizens; Screamfield offers "full-scare" and family friendly hauntings.

WHERE: Plainfield Police Department, 14300 S. Coil Plus Dr., Plainfield

WHEN: 6-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 (full scare); 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 (family friendly); 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 (full scare)

HOW MUCH: $5 for ages 7 and up and free to ages 6 and under (family friendly); full-scare haunting is $10 per person. Proceeds benefit the Plainfield District 202 Foundation for Excellence.

Creepside Haunting

WHAT: For the fifth year, Creepside returns to serve up a scary good time — for some good causes.

WHERE: 15416 S. Creekside Dr., Plainfield

WHEN: Dusk to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; dusk to 10 p.m. on weekends

HOW MUCH: Admission cost is a food donation to the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry or Help Save Pets 

Joliet

Agony Haunted House

WHAT: Walk through the elaborate house of horrors designed by brothers Brian and Eric Semplinki – if you dare. But watch out for the monstrous cast of characters awaiting your arrival at the popular Joliet haunt.

WHERE: 602 Western Ave., Joliet

WHEN: 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 and Sunday, Oct. 28; 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26; 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31 (closed for private event Saturday, Oct. 27)

HOW MUCH: Free; donations accepted 

Bolingbrook

Haunted Mansion & Asylum 13 

WHAT: Haunted Mansion: "Neglect, anger, rage and suicide are all ingredients in this house's dark secret." Asylum 13: "The patients in this very unlucky mental ward need your assistance in freeing them from their torment."

WHERE: Bolingbrook Sports Dome, 730 N. Bolingbrook Dr., Bolingbrook

Naperville 

Massacre Haunted House and Fear Factory 3D 

WHAT: With more than 15,000 square feet of haunted labyrinth, frightening mazes, eerie animatronics, 35 rooms and 40 actors will give you a fright. Then check out the 3D haunted attraction Fear Factory. 

WHERE: 3440 Odyssey Ct., Naperville

Aurora 

Basement of the Dead 

WHAT: Legend has it that two men were maimed and scalded in the basement of a large laundry company. Then they vowed to get even. Dare to enter their basement, which is evidence of their work. Also check out the new 3D Haunted attraction, "Shattered." 

WHERE: 42 West New York St., Aurora

HOW MUCH: $25 for both attractions 

Haunted Corn Maze 

WHAT: During the day, this 10-acre corn maze, which this year commemorates the 100th anniversary of DeKalb County, caters to families. But by night, expect chainsaws, a graveyard and more spooks in the maze. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for kids 6-12. 

WHEN: Traditional hours in October are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Haunted hours will end at 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
