Fundraiser Set for Minooka Community High School Teacher

A 5K walk/run and a dining special are set for Saturday.

Already, 190 people have registered for a 5K that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 to help raise money for Mike Assaf and his family.

Assaf was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. His wife, Anna is a stay-at-home mom and the couple, who lives in Plainfield, has four children. The youngest is less than a month old.

"We want to help raise money to alleviate the stress," Jill Nehring, Assaf's co-worker at the high school said.

Assaf has been out of work since September.

"Anytime somebody is in need, we try to come up with anything we can to help them," Nehring said of the (Minooka Community High School) community.

The school community is holding a 5K Run/Walk at Community Park. The event begins at noon, but those who still need to register are asked to arrive between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The event is $30, whether you are walking or running. The first 250 runners registered will get a dry-fit t-shirt. The 5K does not have a maximum number of participants. A link to online registration can be found here.

During the 5K, there will be a raffle. You do not have to participate in the 5K to participate in the raffle.

"We would appreciate anyone coming out that's interested,"Nehring said.

In addition to the 5K, the school community has partnered up with Buffalo Wild Wings in Shorewood for 10 percent of all sales with a coupon go toward the fundraiser.
