Independence Day Celebration Full of Sparkle and Light

Two local residents start the display with the push of a plunger.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Instantly the night sky filled with color bursts.

All with the help of sisters Abby and Maddy Holloway of Channahon.

Abby, 12 and Maddy, 9, were the lucky winners to push the detonator that set off the display yesterday evening at the Channahon Park District's Annual Independence Day Celebration.

"This is one Fourth of July I won't forget," said Maddy. "It was fun."

"This was really cool," Abby said. “It was a great ending to a great day.”

Prior to the park district's schedule of events, residents hosted parties and barbecues in the park and at nearby homes.

Children decorated their bikes, big wheels, scooters and wagons with patriotic decorations and than participated in the "Freedom Parade" to show off their American pride.

While waiting for the fireworks to begin, face painting, a dunk tank and inflatables entertained the kids. The playground, basketball courts and the splash pad were packed also.

An ice cream give way fulfilled the sweet tooth of many residents and several participated in a game of dodgeball.

The band, Life is Drama entertained the 1,000 plus crowd before the night-time display of fireworks.

Editor's Note: The musical selection is John Phillip Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever. This recording was performed by the Joliet Junior College Community Band at its May 2009 concert. This piece is always the finale to every spring concert.
