WWII Vets Sought for Free Honor Flight: Operation Locate a Hero

Regional teams are being formed to help identify the estimated 20,000 surviving World War II Vets in the southwest suburbs. The goal is to get as many as are able to participate in the free, one-day Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Operation Locate a Hero for the southwest suburbs is headquartered at New Lenox Village Hall.  According to Nancy Hoehn, economic development director, those from throughout the Lincoln-Way communities might be particularly interested in joining this effort. However, volunteers from Plainfield south and from Minooka west are invited to join in the regional effort.

A meeting is planned for the day after Memorial Day, from 6-8 pm. May 28 at New Lenox Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway. Teams will work on identifying, planning and assisting in the coordination of Honor Flight veterans.  

who served as an Honor Flight guardian a few years ago with her own father,  is committed to providing this opportunity to veterans from throughout the region. In January, she recalled, the "Home of Proud Americans" hosted a sold-out viewing of "Honor Flight the Movie." The screening was filled with residents from throughout the Chicago region.

Fundraising to cover the cost of the Honor Flight

Culver's Restaurants at 421 E. Lincoln-Highway in New Lenox, at 20592 S. LaGrange Road in Frankfort, at 2063 Ridge Road in Minooka and at 1500 Illinois 59 in Joliet are participating Culver's Day of Giving May 21. A total of 60 Culver's in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana are donating 10 percent of all sales for Honor Flight participants.
