Year's 1st Snowstorm to Land Thursday

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather alert, and some forecasters say we could be in for six to 12 inches of the white stuff.

So, you thought we might skate through winter with fall-like temperatures and rainy days? Snap out of it!

We live in the Chicago suburbs, for heaven's sake, and that means it's eventually going to snow. And if the most recent National Weather Service forecast for the Joliet area proves accurate, "eventually" arrives Thursday.

By late Monday night, the forecast for the Channahon-Minooka area predicted a 90 percent chance of morning rain that day turning to afternoon snow. And that followed a 100 percent chance for rain on Wednesday as well. A weather service warning issued Monday morning said:

"Anyone who plans on traveling across the Midwest Wednesday night through Thursday night should be prepared for difficult travel ... especially for areas west and north of Chicago."

Temperatures will drop from a high of 38 to an overnight low of 20, and gusting wind will create blowing snow, the forecast said.

The weather service, based locally in Romeoville, held off on predicting any accumulations, other than to say "any shift in the track of the surface low wil make a significant difference as to where heavy snow occurs."

Other forecasters, however, are not being as circumspect, with some predicting local accumulations of as much as six to 12 inches.

In the meantime, this is as good a time as any to review both Channahon's and Minooka's rules governing street parking and snow removal. Both villages require cars be removed from village roads after two inches of snow. Click here for details.
