Lisa Berger makes amazing cakes.
She is a cake artist. Cake decorating became her career when she graduated from culinary school and completed a master course at the Wilton School in Woodridge.
“I enjoy the artistic aspect of creating and decorating cakes” Berger said.
Berger worked in the cake industry for a while but it is now something she does in her spare time.
“My hobby is my side business; it’s 100 percent referral and I do for fun” she said.
She grew up in Minooka, and about 10 years ago, she aimed her creative spirit in a different direction. She took on the task of inspiring kids to read as she collaborates to create programming for children at all the Three Rivers Library branches.
“It’s great to work in a close-knit community where you can say hi to people by name on the street” Berger said. “Especially when a program goes successfully. I work very closely with the youth services director; we put a lot time and energy into planning our programming.
“I enjoy working with children. They are always ready to have fun and can laugh at themselves. It warms a special spot in my heart when a little one gives me high five at the end of a program or gives me a hug before leaving. ''
Balancing family and kids and, of course, all of the cake can get tricky and sticky, but Berger has a strong faith and a realistically refreshing look on how she handles it all.
“I suppose the one truth in life that gives me comfort/strength is that God can bring something good out of anything bad," she said.
"I live by the golden rule of treating others the way that I want to be treated and so I am not too good at beating around the bush. People who know me would tell you that I read like a book, I am pretty straight forward - sometimes to a fault - and wear my emotions on my sleeve.”
