Hair Trends Can Be Found Alongside Unique Gifts

High Maintenance Salon & Spa offers all the latest style trends.

At , owner Ellen Troutman offers a wide variety of salon services, including the latest trends. One of the leading trends right now is the addition of feathers.

The fad of feather extensions actually started back in the 70s and has made a comeback. Feathers are used to create a subtle or dramatic highlight without causing damage to hair.

Feathers come in an array of colors from bright to neutral, so it is appealing for all hair colors. They are easily attached to hair by a small wire and micro beads. The bead is tightened with small pliers to prevent it from falling out.

“Lots of girls are coming in and getting these. And they can stay in when you wash your hair,” Troutman said, adding that those girls involved in sports may have to wait until the season is over to get them.

Local school athletic programs are not allowing feathers to be worn during play as a prevention of them getting ripped out of one’s hair or as a distraction.

For those who do not want to commit to permanent color, Bling String adds a colorful, sparkly effect to the hair without permanently coloring it. The product is similar to Christmas tree tinsel.

“This is perfect for the holidays and school dances,” Troutman said.

Troutman's shop at 117 Mondamin in downtown Minooka, employs three stylists in addition to Troutman. And their clients are not always women.
