Magic Dentist to Move Office, But Will Stay in Channahon

Dr. Mark Kaschube is well known not just for his dental practice, but also for his yearly magic show.

The Google office in Zurich, Switzerland has one. So does Red Bull Headquarters in London. And when Channahon Family Dentistry gets it, it will be the first dental office in the world to have one.

What is it you ask? A slide. Yes, a slide like you would see at the playground or an indoor play area. However, it’s only for the enjoyment of the employees.

“When you go down (the slide), you give in and have trust (in the slide),” Dr. Mark Kaschube said. “It puts you in a different frame of mind.”

That frame of mind follows the philosophy that many Fortune 500 companies use in their day-to-day office life.

“We play and have fun, but (are) there for the patients,” Kaschube said. “ We have to make the patients' day and choose our attitude before we start work.”

The slide will be located in the new facility, which is slated to open in the fall. Since minor real estate details are still being hammered out, Kaschube has not disclosed the address for his new facility; only that it will still be in Channahon.

In addition to the staff slide, the new office also will have a complete interactive children’s area and 3D x-ray machines. Kaschube also is going green, and will have a paperless office. In the next few years, patients may see new dental equipment in the Channahon office.

In March, Kaschube will be attending the International Dental Society Convention in Cologne, Germany. The convention will allow him to get a sneak peak of the latest and greatest dental technology due out on the dental market in the next two to five years.

One may think this is all crazy, but if you're a patient at Channahon Family Dentistry, you already know going beyond the norm is not unusual for Kaschube and his staff. It’s not your typical dentist office with white walls and elevator music.

Currently, a visit to the Channahon office includes watching a movie or reading a magazine in the lobby while waiting to see the dentist. While Kaschube drills a patient’s tooth, music from a satellite radio station is piping hits from the Rolling Stones to Lady Gaga over the speakers. You may even hear him or one of his hygienists singing along. His current office has chartreuse and purple walls, which are covered with framed newspaper articles telling stories of his career as a magician and his success in giving back to the community.

Dentist gives back

For the past 21 years, Kaschube has wowed his audiences with his free annual Halloween Magic show, which takes place in Channahon. This year on the Saturday before Halloween, Kaschube and his staff will present “Boo,” a high powered, fast-paced magic show.

The Broadway Dancers of Coal City will also be returning. In past shows, zebras, lion cubs and last year’s appearance of a camel thrilled audiences. Which animal will it be this year?

“You will have to come to the show to find out,” Kaschube said. “It’s a surprise.”

As the event gets closer, more details can be found at magicdentist.com.

Through his American EyeDol program, Kaschube has helped deaf and hearing impaired children develop skills and confidence through the art of magic.

Additionally, Kaschube has participated in various charity events. His business raised $10,000 of the $50,000 needed for healthcare for Danielle Smith, 4, of Minooka. Smith was born with spina bifida.

In the near future, his charity efforts will be focused on juvenile diabetes. Not only are there children in the village who are stricken with this disease, but many of his employees also have relatives who have it.
