State, Local Officials File Pollution Complaint Against ExxonMobil: Report

Attorney General, Will County State's Attorney seeking more than $50,000 in civil penalties and an assurance there will be no more leaks at plant near Channahon.

An alleged chemical leak at ExxonMobil’s oil refinery plant near Interstate-55 and Arsenal Road has led to action by state and Will County officials who want to make sure contaminants are not allowed to be released into the air again, according to a CBS-2 report.

The complaint, filed by Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, alleges an equipment malfunction at ExxonMobil in March led to an uncontrolled release of hydrogen sulfide that lasted more than 9½ hours, according to the report.

The attorney general and Will County state’s attorney are seeking civil penalties of more than $50,000, according to CBS-2.

ExxonMobil issued a statement in response to the complaint.

“We will continue to work with the (Attorney General) to resolve issues related to this filing,” a company spokesman said in the report. “As a matter of practice, we are committed to environmental performance excellence. Our goal is to drive operational incidents with environmental impacts to zero.”
