Gluten-Free at The Department

Joliet restaurant has an option on its menu that makes me happy - gluten-free buns.

I like in Joliet. Their food is great and they host lots of community events. I also like their food. I was lucky enough to eat lunch there last week with the one and only self-proclaimed leprauchan in Will County. I was choosing what to eat and was on the salad section of the menu when I saw the magical words. Under the choices for buns in the build-your-burger section, were the words - gluten-free. Suddenly, I got to chose from a(whole)nother section of the menu. I ordered the rib eye steak sandwich, smothered, on a glorious gluten-free bun. When it arrived, it looked amazing and it tasted even better. This bun was soft, not like cardboard at all, which is sometimes the case for gluten-free.

The whole dish was great. And I have had other options there in the past that were culinary hits as well. The roasted veggies appetizer is one of my favorites. And, the staff is fantastic. They are willing to answer any question you throw at them and will go ask the chef about the ingredients in all the dishes.

My dining companions' choices ran the gamut. From the 7 ounce Ribeye with fresh green beans to the strawberry salad (which would have been my choice if I went with salad), everyone seemed to enjoy the food. The food got rave reviews. And I will tell you that every time I have eaten there, I have found something new to love.

Last year, my family held a birthday party at the restaurant and they were great. They accomodated everyone and on birthdays, they don't play a trite song or come sing and clap at your table. Instead, they turn on a disco ball and play modern music. In the case of our family, it was Lady Gaga.

The Department has specials throughout the week - each Wednesday, bottles of wine are half off during lunch and dinner, Thursdays feature $5 signiture martinis.
