Minooka Church Gives You a 21-Day Challenge

Are you up for the God experience?

Have you ever thought about spending time in the Word every day? Reading your Bible every single day. I know, we are so busy, busy today, scheduling every minute of our lives and running mindlessly around like chickens with our heads cut off.

How is it possible to schedule another 15 minutes into our lives?

Well, members of The Village Christian Church did just that last month. Starting on April 10, they met a 21-day challenge to sit down and put the Word in their lives every day. A Bible verse was posted online or sent to them by e-mail or a hard copy packet was given to them. The challenge was to do it every single day. They did, and many committed to continue the challenge for longer than that three weeks.

It’s important to bring what God wants us to learn into our lives every day, the Village’s minister Nick Sandeno told me.

“The Bible is a living word,” Nick said. “It’s not just a book. It’s what God wants us to know. God works in our lives through His word.”

I spent a year putting God’s word in my life every day. It was a couple of years ago that I went through the read-the-Bible-in-a-year study, and I have to say, it was life-changing. It affected me more than any other thing in my life ever has, save being a parent.

But as much as I grew from that and as much as I knew that’s what God wanted from me, I admit I did not continue a daily study. In fact, I’ve been pretty bad at it.

And that’s what the Village Christian Church is trying to remind us. It’s okay if you haven’t been in a Bible-reading mode before or if you have lapsed. It’s always there, waiting for you to dive back in.

There’s a separation between us and God, Nick said, that makes Him unknowable.

“Reading the Bible helps us learn what makes Him tick,” he said. “It makes it easier to have a relationship with God. It’s easy to be overwhelmed or intimidated on where to begin and how to start, though. We used one verse and one devotional a day.”

You can still access those verses on the church’s Web site. They left them there for us Patch users. Once there, click on “The 21-day challenge” to see them. Choose a time in each day to sit down and spend a little time with it. First thing in the morning, right before bedtime. . . I used to make my time in the 15 minutes while I was waiting to pick my child up from school.

I can guarantee you it won’t be time wasted, and you might find it’s the most valuable 15 minutes you’ve spent all day long.
