Sometimes an Expensive Meal is Worth the Price

Thayers 158 North is full of flavor and ambiance.

It took me a couple minutes working with Mark Rose, our server and the general manager at Thayer's 158 North to find something I could eat on the menu. I cannot tell you how much I would have loved to order the Steak Diane and sink my teeth into bordelaise sauce. But, alas, it was prepared with a roux.

But I applied a lesson I had learned in a previous Dining with Dawn when selecting my meal. Not wanting another incident of , I ordered the lamb. It was phenomenal.

It was tender. It was flavorful. It was missing something you all would have if you ordered it. Normally, the lamb dish at Thayer's 158 North would come with bordelaise sauce. Mine did not have it. And as much as I love that sauce, I did not miss it. I used the Dijon mustard, but the lamb was great on its own. In fact, everything we ate was great, save for the appetizer, which was just good. But I cannot hold that against the chef, since I ordered it with pretty much none of the flavor that came with it.

Sometimes dietary restrictions suck.

When I dined out with , though, I was not alone. There were other dietary restrictions at the table and Rose handled every question with grace.

For their parts, Bill had the Giambota, a pasta dish with Italian sausage and a vodka cream sauce. Bill loved it. He had only one regret.

"Probably the only regret I have is that I shouldn't have eaten so much bread," he said.

Joanne ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. She said the fish had a light flavor.

We all, despite being stuffed and taking home more than half of our meals, splurged on dessert. I went with plain cheesecake, Bill with carrot cake and Joanne with pecan pie. All looked phenomenal. I could only eat my own and even then I surgically removed the cheesecake from the crust. Definitely worth it. Bill said the carrot cake was one of the most unusual he had. It sounded like a carrot cake meets fruitcake, but good. He had no complaints. Nor did Joanne.

Thayer's 158 North is on the pricey side. Each of our meals were between $19.95 and $28.95. If you are looking for a nice restaurant for a special occasion or somewhere you want to drop in hoping to catch a star from the neighboring grabbing a bite after a show, this is well worth a visit. I will be back. They have grilled calamari, which I love at and want to try here. And, I would order the veal schnitzel. Well, that's if it's not breaded. Maybe I should just order the lamb again.
