Lady Eagles Finish Strong First Half

Christmas break finds the Lady Eagles off to their best start ever. The Eagles have dealt with injuries and absences of key players in the first half, but have still managed to have a 6-4 record as Christmas comes.

The Eagles finished their first half schedule last night as they hosted Southside Baptist at Families of Faith.

The Eagles jumped out quick behind Destiny Villalejo and Alli Willis 7 & 8 points respectively. The Eagles led after one 17-6 and never looked back.

When the game was over, the Lady Eagles had secured a 48-19 win.

Willis finished with 18 points and 17 boards, Villalejo finished with 16 points and 14 boards. The encouraging sign was the shooting of Natalie Robertson who snapped out of her first half slump behind 50% shooting from the field and finishing with 10 points.

The Lady Eagles are looking forward to a strong second half as other young players such as Gabi Mauro and Carla Marrero are developing rapidly and providing the strongest, deepest team the Eagles have fielded.

The Eagles will play 6 times (4 at home) and a tournament in January, so they'll be busier than they have been in the early part of the season. It should be an exciting second half as the Eagles will also play 5 conference game in January / February.

The Eagle boys kept rolling last night as well. The Eagles won their eighth in a row (a school record) and stand 12-2 heading into Friday nights final game before the Christmas break.

The Eagles squared off with Southside Baptist and the Torchmen kept it close for much of the first half. Josiah Blan hit a three at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Then the Eagles took off. Josiah Blan poured in 8 more in the second quarter and Brandon Cline 5 of his 9 points in the quarter as the Eagles raced out to a 30-17 halftime lead.

The Eagles stretched things out in the second half behind Blan with 14 of his 30, Cody Blan, 5 points, Cline's final 4, Vincent Dorantes with 8, Brandon Coleman with 4 and Josiah Bestler with 3. When the dust settled the Eagles finished with a 68-36 win.

The Eagle boys host City Baptist (Hammond, IN) on Friday at 6:30. The Lady Eagles and the boys will then hit Christmas break. They'll both resume play after Christmas at home January 7 against Lighthouse College Prep Academy (Gary, IN).
