Photo Blog: Who Let The Sun Dog Out?

Channahon -- An atmospheric optical phenomenon graced the area. A parhelion (pronounced pahr-hee-lee-uhn) or commonly referred to as a mock sun or sun dog appeared in the skies over northern Illinois today.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, parhelia occur when the sun or moon shines through cirrus clouds composed of hexagonal ice crystals.
