A Leading Cause in Child Deaths

The attorneys of Malman Law know that it is a parent’s worst nightmare to see their child injured or to lose a child. That is why if you were involved in such an accident, we will be there to fight for your case with complete dedication to you and your family members. When getting into the car with children, most of us do our best to be sure that our children are protected with properly fitted seatbelts, car seats and booster seats. However, sometimes there are circumstances that are out of our control, such as other negligent drivers on the road who may be driving reckless, distracted, aggressive, or under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.

A recent traffic safety report on the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website delivered news that child traffic deaths have remained the same, this is despite newly enforced laws and improved safety campaigns regarding proper seating in the car for children. In 2011 the NHTSA reported that, “approximately two children under the age of 13 were killed and 338 were injured every day while riding in cars, SUVs, pickups and vans.[1]” The NHTSA wants parents to know that they are their child’s first line of defense in the car. The U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx stated of the release, "Safety is our top priority, particularly when it comes to protecting our children – who are our most vulnerable passengers.” He continued, "Parents and caregivers can be the first line of defense by ensuring their children are correctly secured in the right seat for their size and age, and by buckling up themselves." Taking these extra precautions are major preventative steps to keeping your child safe if you happen to be in a vehicle crash.

All though there is still room for improvement when it comes to keeping our kids safe on the road, the NHTSA did state that it was estimated from “1975 through 2011, approximately 10,000 lives were saved by child restraints for children under the age of 5 in passenger vehicles, with more than 260 lives saved in 2011 alone.”
