Coal City Woman in Channahon Killer Crash Can't Get Bond Dropped

Tiffany Unland was taken to court in a wheelchair and cried after the judge didn't reduce her bond.

The Coal City woman charged with killing a Palatine man in a drunken crash tried for a second time to get her bond lowered.

Tiffany Unland, 30, was rolled into court in a wheelchair but stood up in front of Judge Richard Schoenstedt when her attorney asked to have her bond lowered from $120,000 to $50,000 during a Tuesday morning hearing.

Schoenstedt wouldn't budge, sending Unland back to jail where she is being held on charges of aggravated driving under the influence.

Unland's bond had already been . After Schoenstedt broke the bad news about not going any lower, Unland started crying while speaking with her lawyer, Elizabeth Johnson.

Unland allegedly killed 46-year-old Anthony B. Calhoun in an Aug. 31 head-on collision on Route 6 in Channahon.

The injuries Unland suffered in the crash are one of the reasons she should be able to post a lower bond, according to court papers filed by her lawyer, as she has medical insurance and can cover the cost of the surgery she claims to need.

Other points made in the motion to reduce Unland's bond were:

  • She has four children ranging in age from 18 months to 12 years and has to watch them while her husband works.
  • Her children are involved in extracurricular activities.
  • She has a serious drinking problem and needs professional help.
  • This serious drinking problem stems from a poor childhood and bad parents.
  • She signed up for alcohol counseling but can't participate in it until she is transferred out of the jail's medical unit.

Johnson said about 20 people were contacted about chipping in for Unland's bail. She said she thinks they can scrape together about $5,000, which is enough to cover the 10 percent on a $50,000 bond.

Johnson also told Schoenstedt that if Unland isn't allowed out to watch her children while her husband works, he will lose his job and the family will lose their house.
