I-80 Semi-Truck Collision Leaves Man Badly Hurt

The accident was caused by one truck clipping another, forcing the second truck into the median, according to the Illinois State Police.

Update 8:25 p.m.

A Chicago man was seriously injured Thursday when his semi-truck was clipped by another semi on Interstate 80, forcing his vehicle into the grassy median west of Briggs Street, Illinois State Police Sgt. James M. Powell said.

The accident occurred at about 1:15 p.m. when a truck traveling in the right lane of westbound I-80 pulled into the left lane and collided with a second truck already in that lane, Powell said. The impact caused the second truck to veer into the center median.

The truck driver, 38, was badly injured and transported to a Joliet-area hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to serious, Powell said.

Both lanes of westbound I-80 were closed for more than five hours. One lane of traffic reopened at about 5:30 p.m., but the scene was not completely cleared until about 7:45 p.m., Powell said. A gapers' block into the eastbound lanes of traffic caused a long jam on both side of the interstate, he said.

It's possible they may need to close a lane tomorrow to clean up any fuel that remains from the spill caused by the crash, he said.

The driver who caused the accident, a 30-year-old Chicago man, stopped at the scene and was issued two tickets. Powell said he did not know what charges were cited.

Updated 6:33 p.m.

Illinois State Police Sgt. James M. Powell issued this statement: "All lanes of I-80 westbound at Briggs street are open at this time. The left lane will be closed for diesel cleanup. The estimated time for that closure is 1 hour. I will advise when that job is complete and the left lane reopens."

Updated 3:16 p.m.

State police said the truck hit another vehicle and that one person was injured. Further details weren't immediately available. Traffic is still backed up on I-80. Check back for more details.

Earlier:

The two westbound lanes of Interstate 80, just west of Briggs Street in Joliet, have been closed by an accident involving a semi-tractor truck.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Martez Malone said the accident caused the truck to lose its load, and he was not sure on the timetable to clear the debris. No other details were available.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area, if possible.

We'll post more information as it becomes available.

I TOO TRAVEL THIS ROUTE EVERYDAY AND I WAS A WITNESS TO THIS ACCIDENT, THE TRUCK DRIVER WHO CAUSED THE ACCIDENT WAS GOING PASS ME AS IF I WAS STANDING STILL. HE WAS ALSO ON HIS CELL PHONE, WHEN I PULLED OVER TO TELL THE POLICE WHAT I SEEN I WAS TOLD MY ASSISTANCE WAS NOT NEEDED AND I CAN LEAVE. I TRIED TO TELL THE STATE TROOPER WHAT I SAW WHEN THAT DRIVER SWERVED AND ALMOST HIT ME BECAUSE OF BEING ON HIS CELL PHONE, I BLEW MY HORN AND PLAYED IT OUT TO HANG UP THE PHONE THIS DRIVER GAVE ME THE FINGER AND KEPT TAILGATING ME TILL I SPED AWAY AND GO INTO THE OTHER LANE AND THE 15 MINUTES LATER THE CRASH HAPPENED. ITS A SHAME A STATE TROOPER CAN PULL YOU OVER CAUSE YOU HAVE LENSES ON YOUR LICENSE PLATE BUT CANT PULL TRUCK DRIVERS OVER FOR TALKING ON A CELL PHONE IN SUCH A DANGEROUS VEHICLE... WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THAT

Okay - I have the solution. Let's just get rid of the trucks. That way we won't have to worry about reckless driving. Of course, there won't be food at the store, clothing, or anything else you buy. It's not just the trucks - we are all guilty of reckless driving. I love how on I 80 - cars ride along in the left lane and cut people off to get on the I55 exit ramp - -- The truck driver on the cell phone - that's illegal -- they are supposed to use a hands free device. However people in cars don't - so it's okay for them to chat on the phone, use their laptop, text, etc. Again -- we are all guilty

No you moron, I'm the one in the right hand lane driving the speed limit as a-holes like you speed by on the left.....Oh and by the way, I used to drive a truck, then I finished school and got a real job that takes brains.

Hey Common Sense - a real job that takes brains? Wow - that really wasn't warranted. This forum is for comments, not attacks on people you don't know personally.
