Out of respect for the victim's families, do you know that they were contacted before these pictures were posted? There is a difference between news and people gawking. No reason for these pictures to be posted whatsoever. Everyone knows what a car/truck that has crashed looks like. I surely would not want to find out a loved one was involved in something like this before being notified.
Alicia September 01, 2012 at 12:52 AM
Agreed...this thread is not channel 5. Once it is certain the next of kin has been notified...then and only then should it be okay for any amateur photos and reports to be posted.
Angie September 01, 2012 at 01:09 AM
My cousin and his daughter were murdered... My mother saw their house on the news. This is the way it is. Am I okay with it, no. But, victims seem to have no rights with any kind of media, social or not. Fact of the matter is, most people, myself included, want details. Not for gossip, but out of concern for those involved. Had we not seen my cousin's house, and heard rimors, it would have been a very long time before the authorities figured out a next of kin. We were able to notify the authorities instead. So, the situation is never good but, sometimes, pictures getting out can help to confirm quicker. My heart goes out to all people involved in this awful accident.
Msnico4 September 01, 2012 at 01:21 AM
I think you o a great job of keeping us informed on local news,Dawn & for that thank you! I agree the next of kin shouldn't have to see these pictures, but you did do a great job of photographically telling the story without giving the identities of the victims through license plates or even the make of vehicles. You were just doing your job. And whether you had posted pictures or not, it's a very very sad story for our village.
Michelle M. September 01, 2012 at 01:26 AM
Angie, I definitely agree with you. I am so sorry about the loss of your family members. The reason i am bringing this up is similar to yours, my younger brother was in a fatal car accident 2 years ago a block away from where he worked. Just being told by my family/boss when I was at work was traumatic enough over that part at all. And yes, you are absolutely right about the pictures, but there is absolutely NO reason for the tragic pictures to be shown for the gawkers to look at. If they were not at the scene, what purpose do they serve for them in the case of the accident? For your case, I can see a difference but for an accident...NO.
Christy Bart September 01, 2012 at 01:35 AM
Seriously, how would you feel Dawn, if you seen these pics and discovered it was someone you know, or you THINK its someone in your family? This is not the first time you have discusted me, I will no longer read the patch, and I believe I will be making phone calls tomorrow.
Bruce knight September 01, 2012 at 02:08 AM
Christy shut ur mouth! Quit being such an idiot!
Michelle M. September 01, 2012 at 02:43 AM
Maggie, you contradicted yourself I am sorry to say. This Patch is not a news channel like CBS and even they have the couth to do it after the fact, with pictures, to wait until at least enough time has passed where kin could be contacted. There is NO NEED for the pictures. The write up is fine. Like i said before, everyone knows from movies and the REAL news what a car accident looks like. This was NOT good news. The write-up fine, but not the pictures.
Tara C September 01, 2012 at 02:57 AM
My husband died in a car accident on 55 & 53 and the news choppers were over reporting it. Everyone knew 2 hours before me. It happens, it's news. I don't have hate towards them because that's their jobs and if I'd have been watching...I'd have known sooner too. If these pictures and reports bother you...don't read them! don't friend the newspapers!
Michelle M. September 01, 2012 at 04:19 AM
Wow...Tara..I'm sorry but I can't believe that you can say that in where you are at. Yes, you have the right to your own opinion, but this Patch is not "news". Sorry. This is a place to get information, and like I told my neighbors, posting the pictures MUCH later than the accident...okay. Right after, no. I am sad that you think that is okay. If I would have found out in that way about my younger brother who died in a tragic car accident a couple of years ago, there would be hell to pay. Nooone should ever hear that EVER, that their sibling or loved one is gone, through darn pictures through a FB post! And you did, again, I am so sorry, but i would think this would dishearten you. The Patch to TELL the news...one thing...to show pictures right after...UNACCEPTABLE. BUT i guess all have a right to their opinions but families should have the right to grieve, especially right at first. I am still grieving and will never stop. The day I found out still feels like the first day.
Lori September 01, 2012 at 04:55 AM
I don't think the pictures give enough detail on what type or make of car this is, so would be difficult to say exactly if it belonged to someone I knew. I think they were carefully chosen to show accident scene without to much detail.
Michelle M. September 01, 2012 at 05:45 AM
Lori...I am sorry, but Channahon is a small town, with a few places to work. And where the very informative information IN WORDS(which I have no problem with) tells us what happens and where, people know where people work and where they are when they love them. I am not trying to be rude, but if you think these pictures were carefully chosen, what??? These are 7 pictures that were taken, haphazardly and then posted. Sorry...no planning. I have someone that I know in media...I love him/her....it is the first to post on FB, to be the best...I really didn't think the Minooka Patch was like that./ Not a fan anymore, but will continue to post on this because this is terrible thing beyond anything!
Earnan Drummann September 01, 2012 at 06:22 AM
So very sorry for the loss. I am so sad. Please don't blame the media, Patch did what we want them to do. In these days where cell phone cameras and social media are common, we get ahead of ourselves sometimes and nobody cares about it until it hits home. Please, take some advice from this old guy and use your toys with respect for others: while driving, while not driving, while on your couch or at your desk. The decisions we make affects others.
Michelle M. September 01, 2012 at 06:29 AM
I am sorry Earnan, this has nothing to do with bystanders taking pics. And the proof is in the succession of the Patch's pics we saw that the LOVELY (saying that with HIGH sarcasm) Patch supplied for us and when they were talking to the Police. And before you posted your comment, I had a question for our lovely Channahon-Minooka Patch, "Did the police officers know you were going to post the pictures you took as, and/or as quickly as you did???". I am really hoping for an answer from the Patch on here or on my e-mail. Thank you.
Judith September 01, 2012 at 06:55 AM
Thank you for the story Dawn
Bob September 01, 2012 at 10:06 AM
Really does your son always park his car on it's side, I was there and I live near there and that car was unidentifiable at any angle .
SayWhat? September 01, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Hmm new here in town,,,, but i now see that Michelle M must be one of the towns Gossips that insist on pushing her opinion on everyone else. It a NEWS Story.
Jackie September 01, 2012 at 01:42 PM
Here is the bottom line people....someone died in this crash!!! Name calling and just being down right rude should not be happening. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone can voice their opinion. But when you start name calling...c'mon!!! This is what is wrong with our society today. SOMEONE DIED!!!! Someone's child, parent, sibling, Aunt/Uncle. Do you really think that telling someone they live a sheltered life, or calling someone a town gossip really matters here. Does posting the pictures really matter? Everyone needs to take a step back here, treat people with respect, and pray for the people that have lost a loved one!!!
Silly Willy September 01, 2012 at 02:15 PM
No I agree awith Michelle. Some things, the gawking general public just don't nee see. The scene of someones death needs to be a little more sacred. Pictures of crumpled up cars don't make a story more readable. Have a little respect for those involved. They and their are hurting in ways I more ways than I ever hope to imagine.
Lori September 01, 2012 at 02:18 PM
Amen Jackie.
Infamous Steve September 01, 2012 at 02:35 PM
I just read all the comments and let me say...those of you that are offended by the pictures sound like a bunch of children. Why should a accident scene be sacred? Just because someone died on a public road? People die on roads everyday not one of those deaths matters anymore then the next or the last. People are plentiful on the planet. Every death is not sacred....it is just one less person to deal with, take care of, and support. Yea it sucks for the family that lost someone.....but everyone dies one way or another. Why pictures of their crashed cars matter so much to you people is beyond me. Great job on the NEWS Patch and the pictures!
Watchful Eye September 01, 2012 at 02:48 PM
First of all, I am very sorry for the traffic victim's family. However, I am puzzled that half of the commentary was spent putting down the writer's content because pictures were posted with it. The two major newspapers do it, online and in print. The morning news shows, when updating traffic reports have their helicopters hoovering overhead with live pictures. I read a story online about a Dan Ryan crash involving a motorcycle the other day, and the accident victim's motorcycle was pictured, lying on its side. Why is this particular reporter, this online news source, and this particular crash report being slammed like this? It doesn't make any sense, when the content is no more than what any media outlet does. Dawn - we've never met and I don't know who you are, but for whatever it's worth, I find no fault with how you reported this story.
Michelle M. September 01, 2012 at 02:52 PM
Exactly Meghan...and if any person actually reading my posts paid attention (@ Saywhat), I am NOT pushing my opinion on anyone or the town gossip, plus lived here my whole life dear newcomer. Just stating HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR THE FAMILIES GOING THROUGH THIS HORRIFIC TIME!! @ Adam, you were so sweet in saying that it may be a loved one of yours to the people reading this (high sarcasm there). I lost my brother 2 years ago in a very tragic car accident and THIS is why it hits so close to home. If I were to have found out this way, there would be issues. The pictures he families have to see going through this are enough and never leave your mind, so having this being how you find out would be horrific. So you should watch how you express your words to people because you don't know what they have gone through. As for a sheltered life, again you should watch your words and namecalling, never on here have I been insulting as like you are. There are ways to express your opinion without being insulting like you are. @ people thinking these pictures don't give enough view, you wouldn't be saying that if you knew your loved one drove this stretch of road every day. I live very close to it and this part of Rt. 6 and it is very dangerous.
Shannon September 01, 2012 at 05:22 PM
Let's stop the arguing and focus on what's important, praying for everyone involved in this tragedy.
Michelle M. September 01, 2012 at 08:04 PM
I absolutely agree Nancy on both of your comments, especially the "lovely" one from Infamous Steve. So sorry one of the people involved is a relative. @Charles, i am sorry but, again my opinion, a tragedy from a football player, sport, etc. Is TOTALLY different than a mangled up car. I don't seem to recall seeing on news sources of any kind up close of the person of that kinds of accident.
Jackie September 01, 2012 at 09:00 PM
I'll say this again...Please move on from the whole thing. SOMEONE DIED!!! Did you ever think for once that maybe the family of the person who lost their life is reading this and it's upsetting them because you guys are only talking about a matter of opinion. And not about that this man was a father, husband, son, brother, uncle, grandchild etc. Just something to think about...
GCB September 01, 2012 at 09:45 PM
First, I would like to send my sincere condolences to the family that lost their loved one. Second, I find NOTHING wrong with Patch printing these pictures. This is nothing more than good news reporting. Had they printed pictures of the body in the car or being removed, that would have been distasteful...accident pictures are not. Anyone who happened to be driving by on Route 6 would have seen the same thing and more. These pictures showed nothing more than the under carriage of a car. A car that was unidentifiable unless (as Adam stated above) the family could recognize the undercarriage of their loved one's car. I subscribe to the Patch because I want to be kept abreast of the news in my community. Not just the happy news...ALL the news. While this was no doubt tragic and sad, it is nonetheless news.
JustinPatches September 01, 2012 at 11:54 PM
LeALap, there was a pick up truck and a sedan involved with the crash. Read the story. I pray for all these victims families and hope their looking down from heaven asking why are people fighting over the pics that were released. WHO GIVES TWO SH@TS! Really! I am praying!
Chester Rook September 02, 2012 at 05:26 AM
That's why the police didn't release the name of the victim.
sickof stupidpeople September 02, 2012 at 03:06 PM
Lmao "Saywhat"....yea Michelle has WAYYYYY TO MUCH TIME ON HER HANDS!!!! Its what the media does.. some people have to whine and cry about everything that goes on. So sorry for everyone involved here....and mainly for you Michelle...heres a tip, get a hobby and quit trying to find things to whine about.
