Fire in Blacktop Truck Results in Evacuation of Residents

Residents in Lake Forest subdivision were evacuated after hearing a loud boom Monday morning.

Sue D'Arcy was cooking when someone pounded on the door Monday morning.

"I heard the big boom and I thought something had happened," she said. "Literally, 30 seconds later, (someone) pounded on the door."

Without giving too much explanation of what happened, the person at the door told her she needed to evacuate her Shorewood home.

"They just were sort of like, get out," she said.

The cause for all the commotion was a blacktop truck that had malfunctioned. A hose on the truck had burst and erupted into fire. What firefighters were most concerned about though was the fact that the truck had 1,000 pound of propane on board.

Minooka and Troy Fire Protection Districts were among those responding. They hosed down the propane tank on the truck to keep it cool, Troy Fire Protection District Chief Steve Engledow said.

In addition to evacuating houses within 1,000 feet of the truck, the incident prevented buses from dropping off children.

The children in the subdivision attend Minooka Community Consolidated District 201, but they had an early dismissal today and the buses could not enter the subdivision, so the parents had to pick them up.

No one was injured in the incident.
