Leak at Exxon-Mobil Closes Arsenal Road

Crews closed the road to clean up a spill of a petroleum-based by-product.

Channahon Police are reporting that Arsenal Road has been temporarily closed from I-55 to about Baseline due to material released from Exxon Mobil.

"The release is reportedly close to the plant and had no known affect to the Village of Channahon," Channahon Police Lt. Mark Fischer said in a written release. "The petroleum-based by product is reportedly not hazardous."

Police are reporting that crews are applying sand to the roadway and that Arsenal Road will reopen as soon as possible.

"We were told that they had a release of a hydrocarbon-based material," Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

The release should not effect Channahon.

"The wind is blowing towards Elwood," Wold said.

Channahon police sent patrol cars to the south east area of Channahon to check on the roads.

Arsenal Road was closed from Interstate 55 east to Baseline by Elwood Police.

According to a story in the Herald News, Exxon Mobile has agreed certain measures in reaction to the airborn release of the chemical this morning.

The company will reportedly set up a toll-free number for people whose property or vehicles were effected by the release, will reimburse those whose cars had to be washed because of the release and semi trailers can was free of charge at A&R Transport, 2223 Empress Road in Joliet.

What are they doing about cleaning our houses and yards? We have pictures of oil pooling in the street in front of our house. No health hazard they say. Drink some of it for me and let me know how you feel. Government and big business screwing us again.
