Residents Must Move Cars After 2 inches of Snow

Both Channahon and Minooka will ticket residents.

Both Channahon and Minooka have rules when more than 2 inches of snow are on the ground.

"Once two inches of snow has fallen, the cars need to be removed from the street until the snow has been removed," Ed Dolezal, Public Works Director said. "With the cars parked on the road, obviously we can't plow where they are, plus they're a hazard as plows are trying to swerve in and out around them."

Vehicles in both villages will be ticketed if breaking the rule. In Minooka, that ticket is $50. Vehicles can return to the streets once they have been cleared.

Residents in Channahon also are reminded that shoveling, plowing or blowing snow into the roadway is against village ordinance.

Snow and Ice

Dolezal said the Village of Channahon tries its best to keep the roads as clear as possible. But, every snowfall is different. And, in some instances, when the snow drifts, it causes more problems.

"Sometimes when we get salt down, it creates an area where snow sticks to it," he said.

That can cause slippery situations. Those situations can also apply when the temperatures fall below freezing.

"We use just plain old rock salt," Dolezal said. "Once you are down into the zero range, it doesn't work so well at all."

There are salts on the market that have more effectiveness at lower temperatures, but Channahon does not face those below freezing temperatures often enough to justify spending the additional money.

"You've got to have a combination of the snow and the freezing temperatures," he said.

Channahon police also wanted to warn residents to remind children not to play or tunnel in roadside snowbanks as plows may not see the children.
