Shorewood Driver Crashes Through School Building

Initial reports indicate that the driver passed out behind the wheel and hit Walnut Trails Elementary School.

No children were injured Wednesday afternoon when a car crashed through an exterior wall at Walnut Trails Elementary School in Shorewood.

"We're just grateful there were no children in the building at the time," Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said.

Ordinarily, the kindergarten classroom would have between 20 and 25 children in it.

"A 37-year-old driver went into a diabetic seizure or coma," he said. "(She) drove through a yard at Parkside and Hunter and through an open field (and into) Walnut Trails School.

"There were no passengers in the car and there were no kids in school, thankfully."

The driver, whose name was not released, but who is a Shorewood resident, was taken to the hospital. Her condition was not available, but Allen said she was stable when she was transported.
