Channahon Anniversary is Upon Us

2011 marks the 50th year since Channahon's incorporation. Many events are planned for the year.

The Village of Channahon was incorporated 50 years ago. And, while the actual anniversary date is in December, village officials have decided to make 2011 a year-long celebration.

"It's now 2011 and we're ramping up; throughout the year, we'll have a list of events," Village President Joe Cook said. "This is especially exciting for me being that my uncle was the first mayor, and my family played a role in the incorporation of Channahon."

Events are being planned now by the Channahon 50th Anniversary Committee. Its next meeting is set for 9 a.m., Jan. 13 at the Channahon Municipal Building, 24555 S. Navajo Dr., in Channahon. Missy Schumacher, Channahon Village Clerk, is chairing the committee, which is still accepting members.

"We're in need of manpower more than anything else," she said. "We're also looking for old pictures."

So far, the committee has planned events in April, May, June, September and December. They are planning at least two events in conjuntion with the Channahon Park District, that is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Although the village is celebrating its most recent incorporation, the village of Channahon was incorporated and unincorporated before 1961. In addition, there are many families who have lived in this area long before its incorporation as Channahon.

"My family has been here since the 1920s," Cook said. "People have been here prior to the incorporation."
