Channahon Board Honors "Bee" Students

Board closes out semester with super students, OKs tax levy.

Channahon Community Consolidated District 17 board finished the fall semester at its Monday night meeting by honoring students who took top honors in school competitions.

Teacher Kim Yonker introduced the winners of the district spelling bee to the board. The overall winner was seventh-grader . The overall runner-up was eighth-grader . Winners and runners-up at the grade level include eighth-graders Daniel Burdick and , seventh-grader and sixth-graders Arianna Karnezis and MacKenzie Singer.

Yonker congratulated the students, especially the sixth-graders, who she said did really well, even knocking out some seventh- and eighth-graders out of competition.

Yonker also introduced the winners of the district geography bee. was the overall winner. Spencer Scranton was the runner-up. Yonker said Andrew advanced to the state competition, where he took a scantron test and sent it in.

"It's hit or miss whether we're in or not," said Yonker of Andrew's chances. He will find out in the spring whether he will advance.

Superintendent Karin Evans congratulated all the students, as well as the parents who attended the board meeting.

"We're very proud of your children," she said.

Tax Levy

The board also voted Monday night to accept the 2011 tax levy for the district.

The total estimated assessed value for the district for 2011 is more than $613 million, which is 1.3% higher than in 2010, mostly owing to more than $28 million in new construction in the district.

This year's tax rate is 2.6957, which will total a tax levy of more than $16 million.  

The board hosted a public hearing on the tax levy before its regular meeting.
