Sweet Music: Channahon Junior High School Continues Winning Tradition

CJHS grabs first place at band contest.

Results were posted. The cheers and smiles on their faces told it all.

In continuing its legacy, the Channahon Junior High School Band once again wowed the judges. In return, the band received a first place rating at band contest competition Saturday.

“I have a good group of kids and they played well,” said Band Director Kevin Becker. “They were not nervous. Many have been through this before.”

That wasn't the case for sixth-grade clarinetist Elizabeth Badalamenti; this was her first time appearing at contest.

“I liked it very much,” Badalamenti said. “It was very exciting.”

The Illinois Grade School Music Association District VI Band Contest was held at Manhattan Junior High School. Sixteen area bands participated in the contest.

Yes, Becker and his band were happy with the results. However, earning a first place ranking for the band is nothing new. Under Becker’s direction, the band has been consistent in earning first place recognition for at least the past 11 years.

“I think Mr. Becker did a very good job preparing us for contest and making sure we sounded our best,” said Badalamenti. “Our band deserved it. We worked very hard.”

Contest judges evaluate the bands on intonation, tone quality, how the ensemble’s sound is balanced, interpretation and musicianship. Fluency of technique, rhythmic accuracy and stage presentation are also taken into consideration by the judges.

Becker said contest judges usually look closely at a band’s intonation and pitch. But he had no worries.

“Our intonation and pitch were good,” Becker said. “Overall, I’m pleased with the performance.”

The band's next performance is on Wednesday, March 16 at the Channahon Music Booster's 2nd Annual Italian Pasta Dinner. The event will be held at Channahon Junior High School from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
