JCA Sports Wrap: Hilltopper Baseball 3-0

Chris Tschida led the way offensively as the Hilltoppers beat Marmion and Wheaton Warrenville South. Meanwhile, the Angels' softball team was off to 2-0 start.

Home runs. Doubles. Triples. Runs batted in.

Joliet Catholic Academy’s Chris Tschida took control in those four categories to light the offensive way in back-to-back wins. The junior shortstop powered the Hilltoppers to a 4-0 victory over Marmion and then a 7-2 decision over Wheaton Warrenville South.

JCA (3-0) jumped to a 2-0 lead over WWS and never trailed, clinching with a 4-run seventh. Tschida led with a double and 3 RBIs. Nate Searing added 3 hits, Ryan Peter had 2 hits and 2 runs and Alex Voitik added 2 RBIs. Zach Melone scored twice. John Chignoli (1-0) tossed a 5-strikeout 1-hitter over 5 innings.

Tschida homered and tripled against Marmion, with his 2-run homer in the second inning giving the Hilltoppers the lead for good. A 2-run third provided icing as Searing started the scoring with a sacrifice fly and Brock Pluth plated Peter with another sacrifice fly. Chris Blatti fanned 5 in a 6-inning 1-hitter.

SOFTBALL: The Angels’ softball team improved to 2-0 with consecutive victories over Reed-Custer. JCA opened with a 4-0 victory over the Comets and followed up with a 7-2 win.

Mallory Goulding struck out 12 and pitched a 4-hitter in the opener. Haley Gerl and Claire O’Connor each had 2 hits, a run scored and an RBI. The Angels scored 2 runs in the first and cruised from there.

Goulding smacked a 2-run homer among her 2 hits and added 3 RBIs in the 7-2 win. O’Connor contributed 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBIs and winning pitcher Alex Wyss also had 2 hits for JCA (2-0).

TRACK: JCA’s boys and girls track teams hosted Manteno, with the Angels and Hilltoppers taking first place in nine individual events. Three relay teams also placed first in the home meet.

Alex Blotnik (12:55 in 3,200), Paige Wogen (13.87 in 100), Tommy Wiffler (2:13 in 800), Stephanie Demos (2:46 in 800), Horton Grayson (54.38 in 400), Francesca Sikorski (1:02.53 in 400), Brandon Holy (25.53 in 200), Rachelle Sartori (5:35 in 1,600) and Anthony Salata (35-6, triple jumper) won events.

NATIONALS: Sikorski recently placed second in the 1,500-meter run at the USATF Youth Indoor National Championship held at Illinois State University’s Horton Fieldhouse in Normal. Sikorski finished in 5:22.68. Click here to see a photo of the event.
