Minooka School Board Considers New Grading System

Results of community-wide survey show respondents support a new 10-point grading system in the Minooka Community High School district.

Perception? Or reality?

After learning the results of a community-wide survey, Minooka High School board members are contemplating a change in the grading system used in the school's two campus locations, according to a Sun-Times News Group report.

Nearly 1,400 individuals responded to the survey asking whether they favored Minooka's current seven-point grading scale or would rather move to a 10-point scale, according to the report.

Students supported the move to a 10-point scale, at least in part because of the perception Minooka's seven-point scale has a negative impact on their college applications, scholarships and financial aid applications, according to the report.

"The fact we had over 1,000 responses from community members really speaks volumes about how important this is to students and parents," Minooka community relations director Dave DiLorenzo said in the Sun-Times News Group report.

Before any change is made, the school board committee studying the subject wants to find out more about how colleges and universities assess applicants and if Minooka's current seven-point scale truly has a negative impact, according to the report.
