Scholarship Recipient is Working on an Engineering Degree

Although the 2011 graduate is relatively close to home, her college experience is an ongoing adventure.

Jessica Froidcoeur, 2011 Graduate

Jessica Froidcouer is putting her scholarship to good use.

She is currently enrolled in the engineering program at North Central College with an emphasis on chemical engineering. She is part of NCC’s program that allows her to complete three years at NCC and her last year in an engineering program with a partner school. Her top two choices are the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or the University of Minnesota.

Froidcouer is one of the 2011 recipients of the Channahon Minooka Chamber Scholarships awarded by the Grundy County Chamber Foundation. The $500 scholarship was awarded based on her academics and community service.

Classmate Janet Speckman of , who is attending the University of St. Francis as a business major was the other scholarship winner.

Froidcouer was an honors student throughout high school. She played on the tennis team and performed on her flute in the marching band.

Her resume of community service includes volunteering her time at the Daybreak Shelter in Joliet and in her church. She also served as a volunteer for the Appalachian Service Project, a Christian volunteer organization that repair homes for low-income families, specifically in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

But for now, she is adjusting to college life. The dorm, campus, clubs, making new friends and visiting downtown Naperville are areas of concentration.

She’s staying at the dorm. She is looking into becoming a member of the Chemistry club, especially after she learned that club members have made ice cream from liquid nitrogen. And she is excited about venturing into downtown Naperville, where there are many stores, restaurants and the historic riverwalk and Napersettlement.

“It’s definitely a transition, but I’m having a great time,” Froidcouer said. “I really want to go to the Naper Settlement because I love history.”

American history, including the Civil War and WWII are her favorites, Froidcouer said. She enjoys watching the History Channel and was amazed by her visit to the Smithsonian Holocaust Museum.

Froidcouer once played the flute and she hasn’t given up on music entirely. She was excited when her favorite show, “Glee” aired it’s season premiere recently. And one day she wants to meet Taylor Swift.

“I love her music and the messages sent in her songs,” Froidcouer said. “It would be really nice to talk to her. She seems like a cool person to hang out with.”
