This one's for Sam

Gewalt benefit night Friday at Minooka

Do you want a shot at winning $10,000?

Three contestants will be selected for that chance at Minooka High School’s girls soccer game Friday.

In a show of support for one of its own, Minooka is hosting a benefit for the Sam Gewalt Fund during senior night at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Aurora East.

Gewalt, a senior, was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this season.

She was all-Southwest Prairie Conference a year ago and earned all-SPC honors for the Indians’ league championship girls golf team in the fall. She also served as a manager for the Indians’ Danville regional championship girls basketball squad in the winter.

Gewalt played in one game this year, but will step onto the field with her fellow seniors one last time before closing her soccer career at Minooka.

“Sam has recently been diagnosed with leukemia and began successful treatment a couple weeks ago,” Minooka coach Chris Brolley said. “This game has become our focal point in raising money for the Sam Gewalt Benefit Fund.”

The school will be collecting donations at the door and selling No. 18 T-shirts, in honor of Gewalt.

Three contestants will be selected for a chance to shoot into a target from 25 yards away and win $10,000.

“We took out a small insurance policy if someone makes the shot,” Brolley said.

Since the Indians learned of Gewalt’s fate, they have donned wristbands and headbands with the No. 18 and a pink ribbon on them.

“Athletics play such a big role in what all of us do and occasionally we are reminded of the bigger picture, especially when one of our own is hit with a challenge of this magnitude. Come support not only a great kid, but a good cause in creating some awareness about leukemia.”

Gewalt posted four shutouts a year ago for Minooka (6-7).

Softball

Joliet West fell to 9-12 overall after a 14-0 loss to Lockport Tuesday.

The Tigers had just two hits and committed four errors.

It snapped a two-game win streak. Joliet West beat Barrington 9-3 and Pontiac 10-9 Saturday.

In the win over Barrington, Joliet West scored two runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead, then added five more in the fifth to put it away.

Jordan Davis went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and scored twice. Tresa Fahrner and Amy Diaz had two RBI each.

Fahrner homered in the win over Barrington. Joliet West had an 8-1 lead.

Minooka is 17-6 overall and 7-0 in the Southwest Prairie Conference heading into Thursday’s key match up at Plainfield Central (15-6, 6-1).

A win over the Wildcats would give the Indians a two-game lead and the inside track toward beating the four-time defending conference champions.

Minooka won 4-2 in their first meeting of the season.
