Dwyane Wade is a nice guy. I had the opportunity to chat with him at Joe's Stonecrab in Miami. OurRead More tables were adjacentto each other in the back room. His son accidentally spilled/sprayed some of his Coca Cola on my jacket. It was no big deal but he picked up my check and the 2 others with me. His party was long gone and I requested the check, I was told he took care of it. $440 plus gratuity. We talked about Chicago and our homes.

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz, 51, could face more charges in the highway deaths of four people Monday, July 21, including Ulrike Blopleh of Channahon.
Jp July 23, 2014 at 01:35 pm
It's was a horrible accident. My heart goes out to the families. The news did a cover story on thisRead More stretch of highway. It showed 172 accident 6 deaths and 58 injuries. The state needs to take a look into that. I do feel his bail is excessive. Let alone made him out to look like a murderer who intentionally did this. I guarantee he wishes it was him rather than to take 4 lives. I think there are many occupations that don't require log books yet these people have been up for 24 hrs + and they get behind the wheel. Yes he should be held responsible but There are people committing horrific crimes that don't get that kind of bail. I know when something horrible happens they want to throw the book at that person. Unfortunately nothing will change the outcome. A perfect example is cell phones. Many deaths have resulted from people causing accidents while on the phone. It's against the law to use them when driving but I see it every day. I will say people are responsible for there actions and there the only ones to blame. Don't put the blame on the state police. That's not on them. I feel for them and everyone on that scene because no doubt it was a horrific accident scene

ayar...you seem to be saying rich people need to work...need more money and the like and go intoRead More politics to be successful. Don't you see the fault in that thinking? They are already rich and successful! The aversion to rich/successful/decision makers amazes me. You have a choice of a person with a proven record of success based on their own achievements/wealth. Would you rather continue to elect some stooge who followed orders, passed out leaflets, knocked doors, drove folks to the polls and kissed party bosses dupa's long enough to raise up in power and stature and affect major decision making... the kind of which they have no experience at in the first place...like we have in our State and White House at present??? Give me a guy or gal who has proven themselves! The "Richie rich" I am not a fan of is the guy who inherited daddy's money...likely never worked a day in his life and is looking for recognition. Illinois needs Rauner or someone like him!
Edward Andrysiak July 23, 2014 at 07:36 pm
Change we need...Change we need...heard that before? Thought the "change" was going to beRead More something entirely different? Many did and are now disappointed. I have to wonder why we are so stupid as to believe any politician when they say they will cut, freeze and do other good things based on revenue growth in the State. If you worked for a widget store that was loaded with department after useless department and, high expenses that could be cut but aren't: only to be called to a meeting by the owner who told you they were having cash flow problems (can't pay their bills) and were hoping to increase growth in the store (meaning get more customers and sales)...you might quickly look at that and realize the widget market is topped out and there are NO MORE sales and with no cuts internally...the place will be closing it's doors very soon. Time to go looking! So, don't believe what you hear. A successful business man will know and not admit that he has to cut, cut, cut, expenses and improve income to the best of his ability and hope that the cuts and savings help get the appreciation of the electorate allowing for more time to continue to cut the size and cost of government which will stabilize taxes and hopefully attract businesses and, finally, increase income/revenues. I believe Rauner will do just that! Oh...did I mention he will not need to kiss anyone's dupa because he don't need their money or favors. Vote for the successful candidate!

Last year when the construction in that area began and the crashes started adding up there was anRead More out cry about what to do about it. Well the state police and local and state legislators got together to try and find ways to reduce the amount of accidents in the area. Nice job guys-NOT. I know it is not solely the fault of local and state officials, blame must also go to those who drive recklessly. And by that I mean anything that distracts you from your PRIMARY job which is safely and legally operating your motor vehicle. Having higher speed limits is not the problem. Trucks ignoring the law that states their speed limit is 55mph is so widely ignored that they are a major contributor to the problem. Now I know there are people who will come on here and defend trucker drivers but who hit who here? In both crashes a truck was the initiator, need I say more? Regardless of what the state does there will always be stupid drivers, and as long as we have construction zones and stupid drivers we will have crashes and loss of life.

Rick Johnson – I agree that Illinois has to be more competitive, it’s just a fact ofRead More life. But is there an end to how far we should stoop? It is not just Illinois, but even the business friendly states that are losing out to foreign competition. And while red states are whipsawing blue states, all our states are being adversely affected. In 2013 according to Walgreen’s annual report, they paid about $134 million in state taxes which was about 2.2% of their earnings. What that does not reflect is the $6 million tax credit over a 10 year period nor does it reflect $625,000 in state incentives to train employees. Souce: http://redecatur.com/walgreens-to-renounce-u-s-citizenship/. But, I thought that the Illinois corporate tax rate was between 7% to 9%. In the US we previously argued which was better between red & blue states, and perhaps Walgreens would consider moving to Texas since their stated tax rate is 0% (Not really accurate since they have other ways of taxing corporations) but cheaper none the less. The nominal tax rate for the US is 35%, but corporations with a tax accounting department never actually pay that amount, and in fact many profitable corporations actually net rebates rather that actually paying taxes. I should clarify that those corporations that actually accrue a tax liability will defer the majority of if and therefore the cash actually transferred to the federal/state government is delayed for years. That amounts to an interest free loan in my opinion. But, individuals do not get to defer their taxes indefinitely like corporations. According to Walgreens 2013 annual report, their pre-tax earnings were $3,895 million and they paid $1,122 million (28.8%) but when one considers their tax deferral of $816 million their effective tax rate in 2013 was actually 7.9% As I understand, Switzerland’s nominal tax rate is 17%. I do not know if their effective tax rate is less than that. But I have to ask the questions. Are Illinois taxes really that high when one considers incentives and tax breaks? OK, so Texas’ state tax rate is lower and I understand the allure of moving to Texas, but Walgreens like many other corporations are no longer whipsawing U.S. states, they are saying to hell with all the states and denouncing their U.S. allegiance by exploiting the benefits of inversion. So are the red states taxes too high as well? Or is it the US tax rate that is too high. Again, I want to point out the difference between the nominal rate of 35% vs. Walgreens effective tax rate of 7.9%. Oh and another thing to consider, when corporations leave the burden falls on the individual tax payers. But, that burden is further compounded when those jobs like the ones in Deerfield IL are moved to Switzerland; there are less employed people in the pot to pay the deficits left by the inversion exploiters. I also read where Walgreens received $16.7 billion from Medicare & Medicaid in 2013. Should we maybe consider legislation to spend taxpayer dollars from Medicare & Medicaid to US based pharmacies? Or at least corporations that maintain their headquarters in the US. And I bet the savings that Walgreens realizes will still be spent on lobbying efforts to lessen the tax rate on the US operations that they still have to pay.
Rick Johnson July 22, 2014 at 11:02 am
Jamie, Your response was very well articulated and researched, however I'm not sure the type of taxRead More reform I'm eluding to should be thought of as "stooping". Are their countless loop holes and special deals in place to lower the effective tax rate for companies like Walgreen, encouraging them to keep their jobs and revenue in our state? Absolutely. But that is precisely the problem. Special deals have to be made because our corporate rate is so high. Roughly 70% of the jobs in our country come from small businesses. These same small businesses aren't afforded the special deals received by companies like Abbott, Cat or Walgreen, making it even harder for them to grow and create jobs. Here's the bottom line, it is the responsibility of the CEO and their Board to improve their bottom line and grow their business - growth that is vital for our communities. The trickle down effect of new jobs and subsequent tax dollars feed into things like better education for our kids and lower healthcare costs for our families. But until we decide to actually do something to encourage this growth, we'll continue to see our communities suffer.
Jamie July 22, 2014 at 03:53 pm
Rick, I guess I could have used a better term than stoop, but corporations keep whipsawing statesRead More against each other and now even the US vs. other nations. A line needs to be drawn to say that corporations that want to operate in the US need to abide by a certain standard that is fair for all. If we compare our tax rate to Switzerland for example, we are ignoring the fact that they do not have a comparable military that we have that preserves democracy and capitalism for our nation and many others. However, I do understand that you were referring more so to small business owners, but Walgreens for example competes with small business owners such as ma & pa pharmacies which I cannot even think of any off hand and ma & pa convenience stores. Those tax breaks that Walgreens (just one company out of many that are exploiting inversion) are receiving are used as an unfair advantage against ma & pa stores who in turn want tax breaks as well. Then the downward spiral continues. Eventually government (local, state, fed) bills need to be paid. I am a fiscal-conservative, social-liberal which may be necessary to disclose my next point. Trickle Down Economics is often cited for many reasons, but usually only translates to tax breaks for Big Corporations which are job killers rather than creators over the long-term. The rhetorical dialogue needs to be changed or updated to emphasize the needs that you are talking about. Which means in my opinion holding those candidates who defend Trickle Down Economics accountable for its exploitation and failures and ask how they might improve it. Since the Reagan era, the nominal tax rate has fallen, and yet still net high paying jobs has fallen since then. Yet we somehow the US did not collapse when the top tax bracket was at 90% during or prior to the Kennedy era. I do understand that the economy has gotten globally competitive since the 90% tax bracket and that the technological advances have changed the economic landscape since Reagan so it is not a simple fix. Yet, our tax system has not absorbed those technological changes nor has it addressed all the unfair (my opinion) trade agreements with other nations. We got to re-examine the same political rhetorical dialogue when our candidates keep regurgitating their campaign agendas. Thanks for your compliments on my articulation. I try. I feel it is better to be respectful than to insult opposing views. However, I think we are on the same page for the most part.
