Shorewood resident and Minooka Fire Protection District firefighter Jimmy 'The Freak' Fritz is teaching children how to lead a healthy lifestyle and chasing his dream of making it big in MMA fighting.
He is called Jimmy “The Freak” Fritz. He walks into burning buildings and pulls out victims of smoke inhalation. He works as a firefighter and a paramedic with the Minooka Fire Protection District. He teaches young children the art of self-defense and holds a two-stripe purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is six months into his pro career fighting in the MMA ranks. His trainers know him as “The Freak” for another reason. “When he first came in, he was very awkward,” said James Hill, co-owner of SUDA International Center, the Joliet-gym where Fritz trains six days a week. “He had started lifting weights. So, he was very strong. “But he was very stiff when he moved. He just looked like ‘The Freak.’ These names just have to come to us. …

Some favor a plan to allow Ketone Partners to mine and develop a parcel at U.S. 6 and Bluff Road. Others are against the project. Where do you fall on this issue?
A proposal to allow Ketone Partners to resume mining on a large parcel of land at U.S. 6 and Bluff Road in Channhon had a number of local residents raising their voices on Patch. Ketone, a Chicago-based real estate, consulting and development firm, wants to mine the property for 10-15 years, then turn the land into a luxury residential neighborhood surrounded on three-sides by a 90- to 100-acre lake. The company's plan, as outlined in a recent Village of Channahon planning and zoning commission meeting, calls for 100 homes to be built, each one of the homes sitting on one-acre lots. Here is a Sampling of Patch Readers/Users Had to Say: Bob 6:28 am on Friday, May 17, 2013 another screw up by Pena and his clowns, everything for the village …
Last year, there were eight cases of the mosquito-borne disease in Will County. The CDC said 2012 brought the "largest outbreak ever" of WNV.
The Will County Health Department is asking residents to help minimize the public's risk of West Nile Virus (WNV) by reporting dead bird sightings. Reported sightings can help health officials identify the potential for human infections. Residents can call the county's WNV information line 24/7 to report sightings at 815-740-7631. WNV is a mosquito-borne disease capable of producing encephalitis and meningitis, potentially fatal inflammations of the brain and spinal chord. "WNV poses potential health risks for everyone," said Will County Environmental Health Director Elizabeth Bilotta. "We are interested in the location of dead birds because that information is one way we are able to assess the potential for local virus activity. Dead …

The seller describes this as a rare item that's been in her personal collection and for which she's now asking $500 or more from bidders.
This item -- a pre-Prohibition serving tray for the Fred Sehring Brewing Co. in Joliet -- must be a rare item indeed given that the seller on eBay has started the bidding at $500 (plus $12 shipping). Admittedly, it's a very cool piece of Joliet history but you be the judge whether it's worth $500 or more. Bidding closes Wednesday afternoon and so far no one's publicly met the initial asking price but that doesn't mean they're not watching it. The seller has provided a lot of information: PRE PROHIBITION BREWERY TRAY FROM MY OWN PRIVATE COLLECTION. HAVE OWNED IT LONGER THAN I REMEMBER. DEPICTS BEAUTIFUL SCENE WITH DOG, GIRL AND BOYS AND TITLED "THE CITY COUSIN" A BEAUTY.. LOTS OF INFO ONLINE ABOUT THIS BREWERY . TRAY IS SQUARE AND MEASURES …

From being the first Down syndrome student mainstreamed in her school district to starting her own advocacy organization, Bridget Brown's journeys are far and wide. Sponsored by Grape-Nuts.
Living like a movie star for a week, Bridget Brown of Darien had a small part in a movie with Miley Cyrus. Brown also has her own consulting business, works as a dental assistant’s assistant and has many more jobs in life few of us would ever conquer. Having Down syndrome, the 27-year-old woman is considered to be disabled, but you would never know by the full life she leads. Brown was the first person with a disability included in her school district and is a strong advocate of inclusion. Among her dislikes is hearing someone be insulted. "Don’t call people retarded," Brown says. "I got called that, I was angry and wanted to cry.” Another fight Brown goes up against is mothers who want to abort their babies when they find out the baby…

Matthew Boban was arrested on several charges stemming from the Saturday crime spree, including driving under the influence of drugs, Illinois State Police said.
A Joliet man who stole a woman's purse and then fled in a stolen car, only to crash into a semi on Interstate 80, was arrested Saturday on a slew of charges, including driving under the influence of drugs, Illinois State Police said. Matthew J. Boban, 32, of 521 Mack, was charged after being treated at Silver Cross Medical Center in New Lenox for injuries suffered during the crash. The incident began shortly after noon Saturday when Boban allegedly snagged a woman's purse while in the parking lot of a Joliet Jewel-Osco store at 1401 W. Jefferson St. and then fled in a car taken from a friend, state police said. There was a second person in the car, but it's not known if it was the car's owner. Boban eventually made his way onto eastbound …

Large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are all possible.
Get ready for some storms. The storm system that dropped large hail and tornadoes on parts of Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma is now headed toward Illinois. The National Weather Service has placed most of Illinois in the "slight risk" category for severe weather on Monday and Tuesday. The main threats on both days will be damaging winds and large hail. The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center noted in its technical discussions that isolated tornadoes are also possible on Monday and Tuesday. "The most violent storms will ignite during the afternoon and evening hours as daytime heating causes instability," Accuweather.com Meteorologist Meghan Evans wrote in her forecast. "Plenty of humid air will be in place to fuel the severe storms…

Teach your kids what your heart tells you is right. Those of us involved in MMA do the same. You are not at all out-of-date; you just view the world differently. We are both right -- from our own perspectives. It's OK to be different. If Freak saw your children in danger of ANY kind, he would protect him with his life. He would protect you with his life. That's who he is. That's why we esteem him…   more ›
