The Joliet City Council candidates spoke at an election forum held this week by the African American and Hispanic Coalition.
Joliet City Council candidate Jim McFarland came out in opposition to any immigrant detention center being built in Joliet, speaking Tuesday at a forum sponsored by the African American & Hispanic Coaltion. “I’m 110 percent against it,” McFarland said, according to a story published by the Joliet Herald News. The three incumbents seeking re-election in the April 9 race -- Jan Quillman, Mike Turk and Don Fisher -- were more circumspect, saying that no proposal had been presented and questioning if one would be given the federal government's ongoing budget problems, the story said. Michael Assaf had been battling cancer and passed away on Jan. 27.
Michael V. Assaf, III lost his battle with cancer on Jan. 27. The 38-year-old Minooka Community High School math teacher and wrestling coach was the father of four children. Back in November, Patch wrote about a 5K that had been organized to raise money for Assaf's family. "We want to help raise money to alleviate the stress," Jill Nehring, Assaf's co-worker at the high school, said in the November 2012 story. "Anytime somebody is in need, we try to come up with anything we can to help them." Dave DiLorenzo, director of community relations at MCHS, said the school declined to comment on Assaf's passing. A memorial service for Jason McKenzie, of Joliet, whose body was discovered last week, will be held Friday.
The man whose body was pulled from the Des Plaines River last week has been identified as 31-year-old Jason McKenzie Crawford, the Will County Coroner's Office announced Wednesday. Crawford's body was retrieved from the river on Jan. 18 near the River Club boat launch, 700 Railroad St. The Joliet man's identity was confirmed through dental records, Coroner Patrick O'Neil said in an audiotaped news release. An autopsy conducted Jan. 19 preliminarily determined the cause of death was drowning, O'Neil said. Visitation for Crawford will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Jan. 25 at Kurtz Memorial Chapel, 102 E. Francis Road, New Lenox. A memorial service will start at 7 p.m. Donations are being accepted to pay for the future college expenses of Crawford…

Edward F. Karnas, Jr. services begin on Jan. 24.
Early in the morning Jan. 19, police discovered a body in Shadow Lake. Edward Karnas, Jr.'s obituary says he died doing what he loved. "He had a tragic accident while ice fishing," the obituary states. Karnas is a graduate of Joliet East High School and worked at Exxon Mobile for 30 years.
