Megachurch Sex Lawsuit Filed in Will County: Court Supervision

A lawsuit against an imprisoned preacher from Crete and an Indiana megachurch topped the week's court news.

A former megachurch preacher sentenced to 12 years in federal prison in March for carrying on a sexual relationship with a teenage member of his congregation was sued in Will County court. In addition to preacher Jack Schaap, 55, of Crete, the First Baptist Church of Hammond was named as a defendant in the lawsuit. The parents of a teenage girl Schaap had sex with while he was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond filed the lawsuit. The suit identifies the parents as "John Doe and Mary Doe," and the teen as "Jane Doe." The suit gives Jane Doe's date of birth as June 27, 1995. Update: Man Arrested in Stabbing Death of Joliet Teen in Romeoville

Fabian Almodovar is in custody and will be charged with the murder of Carlos Orozco, who was pronounced dead Thursday night at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital.

Update/5:55 p.m. Friday: A 22-year-old Romeoville man is in custody and will be charged with first-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Carlos Orozco, Romeoville police said. Fabian Almodovar was taken into police custody after being discharged from the hospital, Romeoville Assistant Police Chief Steve Lucchesi said. He said Almodovar, who suffered facial injuries and a concussion, is scheduled to be transported to the Will County jail Friday night. Almodovar is accused of stabbing the Joliet teen in the chest during a fight in the parking lot at Jewel-Osco, 20 S. Weber Road. Police declined to release information on what led to the fight. County Board Endorses State Concealed Carry

A resolution in support of the gun law was approved with a 15-6 vote, with the majority favoring it for the "protection of citizens," officials said.

The following article was supplied by Will County: The Will County Board today approved a resolution supporting legislation allowing Illinois residents the right to carry concealed firearms. The resolution does not allow Will County residents the right to conceal carry, as the Illinois legislature must still pass a law. Illinois is the only state that does not allow citizens to carry concealed firearms in public, and faces a June 9th deadline to draft such a law. “We had a healthy and open debate today about concealed carry,” said Speaker Herbert Brooks, Jr. “Not everyone agreed to this proposed change in Illinois law, but everyone did respect the democratic process that provides for discussion and deliberation about issues important to …

Bicycle Safety Rodeo Saturday at Minooka Police Department

Children are invited to participate in a Children's Bicycle Safety Rodeo from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday in the parking lot at the Minooka Police Department.

Are your children ready to ride into the summer months? Or, could they use a refresher on cycling safety? Well, then this is for you. The Minooka Fire Protection District, Minooka Police Department, Minooka Citizens Police Academy Alumni and Channahon Fire Protection District are teaming forces to put on a Children's Bicycle Safety Rodeo. The event is from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday (May 18, 2013) in the Minooka Police Department parking lot, 121 E. McEvilly Road, Minooka. Admission is free and the event is open to children from kindergarten-fifth grade (just bring your parents). Driver Gets 5 Years For Running Over & Killing Man Lying in Street

A Joliet man took a five year prison sentence for drunkenly driving over a man lying in the road.

A Joliet man was sentenced to five years in prison for running over a person lying across East Washington Street. Vincent Borgic, 61, had been found guilty of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol at the conclusion of a trial before Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak earlier this year. Borgic ran over Scott Zolecki in July 2011. Zolecki was intoxicated and lying down on East Washington Street at the time. "Borgic, who admitted coming from a bar, told police he never saw the victim before running him over with his Dodge Challenger at about 10:30 p.m. that night," according to a statement from Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow's office. 10-Minute Lockdown at Channahon Day Care Center, Minooka High School South Campus

There was a brief lockdown at a Channahon day care center on Tuesday afternoon while police investigated a report of an attempted break-in in the area.

Kidz Korner in Channahon was on lockdown for about 10 minutes on Tuesday afternoon while police investigated a report of an attempted robbery in the vicinity of the child day care center, said Kidz Korner director Tiffany Farkas. The lockdown lasted from about 1:55 to 2:05 p.m., Farkas said. During that time, Kidz Korner personnel used their text alert system to notify parents of the situation. One of the staff members called Channahon police and received an all-clear sign at about 2:05 p.m. One Kidz Korner staff member said she heard Minooka Community High School's South Campus also was on lock-down during the police investigation. Channahon Couple Sues Bolingbrook Adoption Agency After Being Forced to Give Child Back

A Channahon couple is suing Sunny Ridge Family Center in Bolingbrook over an alleged botched adoption in 2011.

A Channahon couple is suing a Bolingbrook adoption agency over an alleged botched adoption, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. John and Denise Steller discussed adopting a child with Sunny Ridge Family Center in 2010 and brought home a toddler in 2011. About 10 months later, the boy's adoptive father challenged the proceedings, and the boy was taken from the Stellers' home.  "In January 2012, a Cook County court found Sunny Ridge did not seek the consent of the boy’s father on the adoption and did not properly terminate the father’s parental rights, the lawsuit states," according to the Sun-Times. Now the Stellers are suing Sunny Ridge for negligence, breach of contract and fraud. They are seeking more than $50,000 on each of the five …
