Minooka Sophomore Fires No-Hitter in Opener

Miguel Ruiz was on top of his game in the season-opener for Minooka Community High School's sophomore baseball team.

Talk about starting the season off with a bang. Minooka Community High School's Miguel Ruiz tossed a no-hitter in the Indians' 7-1 baseball victory over Plainfield Central on Tuesday (April 2) in the season-opener for Minooka's sophomore team. Plainfield Central took advantage of two Minooka errors in the first inning to score its only run. Otherwise, Ruiz had his way with the Wildcats in a dominating performance. He struck out seven, walked two and hit one batter. "He had good command of all three of his pitches," Minooka sophomore coach Trent Bontrager said. "Plainfield Central literally did not hit the ball out of the infield the entire game. "All of their outs were either strikeouts or groundballs. We did turn one double play." Ruiz …

Southland Faces at the White Sox Home Opener 2013

Take a look at images from U.S. Cellular Field as the Chicago White Sox kicked off the 2013 season, and see if you recognize a neighbor or two.

The smell of brats cooking on grills made its way through parking lot C off Shields Avenue. By 11 a.m. the beer was flowing. It was opening day on the southside.  Chicago White Sox baseball is deep in traditions for southside families. With a growing number of baby bears in the south suburbs, it wasn't hard to find Sox fans from the North side. "I've been a lifelong Sox fan," says Dan Kochevar from Glen Ellyn.   Brothers Tim and Dan Bergin from Chicago Heights hold a lifelong love for the Chicago White Sox.   "We have been coming to the park since 1967," said Tim Bergin. "Of course it was Old Comiskey across the street. We have had some great memories. Remembering the 2005 season when the team beat Boston in the division." Dan Bergin …

Would You Still Cheer for the Bears if Their Best Player Was Gay?

A current gay NFL player could come out in a few months and continue to play in the league, according to an online columnist. His biggest concern? Harm from homophobic fans. How would you react if he played for your favorite team?

In the same week the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case of California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage case, a CBS Sports online columnist says a current gay NFL player could come out publicly within the next few months. This player would become the first athlete in one of America's major team sports to be openly gay and continue to play. READ: Check Out the Full CBSSports.com Column for More Details But the obstacle keeping this unidentified player from revealing his sexual orientation isn't the fear of how teammates or even opposing players will react, writes CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman, citing former and current NFL players as sources for this information. It's a worry of what fans might do, Freeman reports…

How about we lighten up on Jenny Mcarthy? She's a mother and has chosen Geneva to raise her son. As far as I know, she's not bothering anyone yet every time there is a mention of her in this rag people use the comment section to call her vile names and suggest every rotten thing in the world about her. Give her a break.   more ›

Technical Glitch Halts Chicago Marathon Registration

Are there any Channahon or Minooka residents planning to run this year's marathon?

For running enthusiasts hoping to register for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon this week, technical difficulties have temporarily halted runner registration. Registration opened Tuesday for the 26.2-mile race, which begins and ends in Grant Park, but ended shortly after due to errors with the online registration process. The earliest date and time registration will re-open is 5 p.m. Thursday. "We have been working nonstop with our registration provider to find the root of the problem and a solution. Many runners were able to sign up before the registration process was suspended. There are currently 15,000 entries remaining. Before we re-open registration, we need to make sure all technical issues are permanently resolved. We will …

West's Defense, Dunnigan Topples Central

Joliet West 63, Joliet Central 55: Morris Dunnigan scored a game-high 24 points as the Tigers jumped out to a big early lead and staved off the Steelmen in the second half on Friday night at JT Central.

The Skinny: Ball-pressure defense and Morris Dunnigan. Joliet West played to its strengths in a 63-55 boys basketball victory over cross-town rival Joliet Central on Friday night before a big crowd at JT Central. The Tigers pushed the Steelmen away from the rim in building leads of 10-1 and 26-12 in the early going. Dunnigan, a 6-foot-2 senior in his fourth year playing varsity ball, supplied enough offensive punch to stave off Joliet Central’s bid to fight back in the second half. He made 7-of-10 shots and scored a game-high 24 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds and proved too much for the Steelmen to handle with the game on the line. Ryan Modiest added 16 points for the Tigers, who stretched their three-year record to 6-0 over Joliet…
