Snickers has been missing since Tuesday night.
Tammy Anderson has been on the phone pretty much nonstop since Tuesday. She has called all the area shelters and veterinarians trying to locate her cat Snickers. She also blanketed the area around Amberleigh Estates, where she lives, with fliers. "I’ve been doing everything I can think of short of knocking on everyone's door," Anderson said. The Anderson family adopted Snickers from the Will County Humane Society. When the cat first arrived, she was not spayed, and when she went into heat, she escaped the house. The family quickly got her spayed, but the cat still managed to get out. The cat is a year and a half old and is the color of a Snickers bar, for which she is named. The cat is microchipped. However, Anderson said she is worried …
A survey is being taken to get public input on whether drivers would like to see the median as an extra lane of traffic and whether they'd be willing to pay for the convenience.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is considering a "managed lane" of traffic on Interstate 55 -- possibly with a fee charged -- to help reduce congestion and create a more predictable commute to and from Chicago. IDOT's Managed Lane Project is studying the addition of a lane of traffic on I-55 in each direction that would begin at Interstate 355 and end at Interstate 90/94, aka the Dan Ryan Expressway. Although the proposed route would start at Bolingbrook, it would affect all commuters who pick up I-55 before that point, including drivers from Channahon, Minooka, Joliet, Plainfield, Romeoville and Shorewood. The first step is a survey on IDOT's Web site seeking such information as how frequently the survey taker uses I-55 is to …

At least one Elwood resident continues to be worried about what was in the substance that covered his property was dangerous and he wants answers.
The first clue for Kelsey Hirmer that something was wrong was the smell. "My mom, for the first time in 33 years, left her work keys at home and she woke me up," Hirmer said. "I made it home and I put my car in the garage and I was like, what is that smell?" Hirmer was in Elwood on Oct. 19 when Exxon Mobile had an airborn release of a hydrocarbon-based material. She said she initially thought it was a very light rain that had fallen on her. "You wouldn’t even have noticed it," she said. "It came down at an angle." Earlier this week, she began to feel ill. "I ended up going to an emergency room on Wednesday and they put me in a hotel, so I wasn’t anywhere near (the affected area)," she said. She absolutely believes her illness has something…

The IEPA won't do anything. They have been called in for other incidents. I am not convinced their pockets are not being lined by the chemical plants in the Channahon/Minooka area so that they will turn a blind eye.   more ›

Siren testing to take place May 25.
From 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 25, the Exxon-Mobile Refinery will be testing a newly-installed siren warning system. The refinery is located on Interstate 55 at Arsenal Road, near Channahon. The new siren warning system is intended to warn employees at the refinery that an emergency situation exists. "This more efficient siren is to replace a whistle-type device which had been in service," Channahon Police said in a written release. "Other plants in the area also have in-plant warning sirens in service."

Village officials plant tree in honor of Arbor Day.
On Arbor Day, 2012, officials in Channahon planted a tree on the memorial tree walk.

The memorial tree walk is about half planted and the village did it for a fraction of the cost.
A couple years ago, the village of Channahon wanted to install a memorial tree walk in the community. They went out to bid for the project, but the bids came in much higher than expected. "Our lowest bid was $25,000 for limestone screening path, which was twice what our engineer's estimate was for it," Ed Dolezal, superintendent of public works said. "And then, that's when we decided to build it ourselves and we ended up doing it for material and equipment rental for $1,400." The memorial tree path has 29 species of trees. "They were actually meant to be the trees that were approved by the village to plant in parkways in front of your house," Dolezal said. That way, residents can see what the trees look like in person. Memorial trees will …
