Drumming, Snowmen and Summer is Coming

I've been to a number of drum circles in my time. Like the two people interviewed in the story today, John Heinz and Dulcinea Hawksworth, I find drumming to be meditative. When I am angry, I can pound a heavy, hard beat and when I am relaxed, it can be a gentle, constant beat that blends in with the other drummers. I find meditation in drumming, but I find listening to others drum relaxing as well. That is why I will be spending my Friday night at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet to watch Drums!, a show that began as a travel commercial and grew into a two hour show. Drum Circles Invite All Levels and Ages

Three Rivers Arts Council offers drum circle.

Stand outside the Three Rivers Arts Council building on a Saturday and listen very carefully. You might hear rhythms from percussion instruments that change and flow and are different minute by minute. You might hear someone playing a drum loudly, keeping the same consistent beat while the other drum sounds change. You may hear the same rhythms for some time. Or you may hear a beat that starts off disjointed, but ends up sounding like a cohesive sound. Such is the beauty of a drum circle. “Its sort of people being part of a communication, an ongoing communication,” John Heinz, who runs the circle at TRAC said. “Everyone eventually gets so that they are on the same beat.” Heinz has been drumming for probably five or six years.  He is a …

I find music in general to be a great way for therapy and mental escapes. Drumming is s wonderful idea and has a great history behind it. Ask a member of the Indian community, a music band or even a kid in music class what it means...it can be such a powerful concept while translating into many wonderful stories...   more ›
