Images Salon in Joliet is holding the fundraiser for the families of Eric Glover and Terrance Rankins, who were killed by four people who allegedly partied after their deaths.
A month ago, the city of Joliet bore witness to a crime so gruesome that the Joliet Police Chief called it the worst thing he had seen in his career. "I think you need to know this is one of the most brutal, heinous, really upsetting things that (I've seen) in 27 years of law enforcement," local police chief Mike Trafton said in a story on Jan. 12. Eric Glover and Terrance Rankins were killed in January. Four people were arrested and indicted in the killings. For the families of Glover and Rankins, the tragedy of losing a loved one to senseless violence in a gruesome crime was only the begining of a struggle. Mourning a loved one is bad enough. Being unable to pay for his funeral is even worse. Yet that is exactly what the families faced …

On one night in October, women in Joliet get dressed up in their finest - pointy hats, pointy shoes, cloaks, brooms, magic wands. They are headed to the Witches' Night Out. "We encourage everyone to dress," said Judy Erwin, co-chair/vendor chair of the Oct. 25 event. Usually, first-time attendees put on black pants and shirt and maybe wear a hat. "The next time they come in costume," she said. Witches Night Out is a fundraiser and the brainchild of co-chairs Erwin and Kathleen Mihelich. "Kathy Mihelich and I were college friends," Erwin said. "We took a road trip and went through a little town called Lebanon, which is a good four or five hours away." While there, the pair attended the Lebanon Witches Night Out event. "We had such fun, we …

Joliet Catholic Academy’s Helping Hands event will be held on Sunday, May 20. Last year's event included a 5K race, family cookout, tug of war tournament and bean bag tournament, all of which successfully raised money for the Helping Hands Tuition Assistance Program. The fundraiser is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the 5K run and fitness walk. Following the run/walk, JCA will debut a Kids Race on the track. The family cookout begins at noon. Joliet Catholic Academy's 27th annual Jubilate carries the theme of March Madness.
What’s in a name? From 1976-1985, it was Jubilation. Since 1986, it also has been called Jubil-Auction, and Jubilation. And now, entering its 27th year, Joliet Catholic Academy celebrates with Jubilaté. The annual fundraising event will be held on Saturday, March 10 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. This year’s theme is JCA March Madness, with dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions and raffles. Christine Voss, JCA’s Special Events Manager, anticipates 400 people in attendance. Donna and George Barr and Kristy (Juricic ’78) and Pete Pluth have been named as the chair couples, with a group of 60 volunteer parents assisting the Barrs and Pluths as committee members. Profits realized from the event go entirely toward JCA’s operating budget, …
Joliet Catholic Academy hosts fundraiser in support of Andrew Giaudrone, who died at the age of 20 after helping the Hilltoppers win the Class 3A baseball state championship.
They were more than teammates. They were more than classmates. They were best friends. Ian Tyrell played baseball with Andrew Giaudrone on Joliet Catholic Academy’s Class 3A state championship team in 2009 and the Hilltoppers’ fourth-place finishers in 2010. And their friendship went back to being a part of the St. Joe’s summer program and as products of St. Raymond grade school. But Giaudrone’s heart belonged here. “JCA meant the world to him,” Tyrell said. “It was, is and always will be what Andrew was really about. It has been a whirlwind, ups and downs, good times and bad times, but that night was a very good time.” A Dueling Pianos fundraiser — Remembering “G” — was held last month in the Student Activity Center. All proceeds are …

Haley Wienke wanted to do something to help Allison Rivera's family and to honor the student's memory.
After mourning the loss of Mitch Fajman and hoping for the recovery of Kelsey Little, the community was struck with another tragedy in October when Minooka Community High School senior Allison Rivera died suddenly from an undetected heart anomaly. Students were devastated. Mourning with the rest of the community was classmate Haley Wienke, who decided she needed to do something. "I've always been the type of person who tries to help somebody who needs help," said Haley, who previously collected donations when Hurricane Katrina hit the East Coast several years ago. Inspired by the way Allison used to sign her name with "Love and peace, Allison," Haley designed a decal she could sell to raise money for the Rivera family. "I wanted to raise …

Ronald McDonald House is called the house that love built, and for Alex Caraynoff, love drives him to raise money for it. "Five years ago, my sister flew over the handlebars on her bike and she had a brain injury," said the Minooka 13 year old. Kaitlyn Caraynoff hit the ground so hard that she knocked herself out, her mother said. "She had no idea where she was," said their mom, Kelly Caraynoff. "We took her home and she couldn't stand up; she was puking her brains out." Kaitlyn Caraynoff, who is now 15, has had numerous sugeries in hospitals across the country and her parents have stayed in more than one Ronald McDonald House. "We're on our 53rd surgery," said her mother, and that was before the trip to the hospital in September. Kaitlyn …

Organizers say more than 175 motorcyclists participated in the event, which collected donations to provide gifts for needy kids at Christmas.
More kids will be getting more toys this holiday season thanks to the biggest turnout ever for the Reindeer Toy Run. The third annual poker run collected hundreds of toys for kids in Will County, with 175 motorcyclists participating in the event Saturday morning, event secretary Debbie Albright said. “I think the weather is a key factor,” she said as people registered for the ride at the American Legion Marne Post 13 in Plainfield. “We’ve never had it this warm before. There are a lot of new faces here today.” Jill Pondel of Joliet was among them. “I’m here to help the kids,” she said. “I like riding with other bikers for a great cause.” Toys will be organized by age for boys and girls, and distributed to SOS Children’s Village in Lockport…

For the second time in as many years, the Channahon Park District will host the Kelly Miller Circus. A percentage of each ticket purchased will go back to the park district to support its scholarship program. Channahon Park District Executive Director Chuck Szoke said the money goes to the George A. McCoy Financial Assistance Program. "That money helps to offset expenses of (park district) programs for people who cannot afford it," Szoke said. The Kelly Miller Circus is a small, traditional circus and Szoke said people have to understand that. "It's what I would call a classical time tent circus," he said. "It's a two-hour show with intermission in between." Kelly Miller Circus general manager Jim Royal said in an earlier interview that …

Funds will provide scholarships and dictionaries for Channahon and Minooka students.
The Channahon Minooka Rotary Club will host its fourth annual October Fest on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Dollinger Family Farm to provide scholarships and awards to area students. Patrick Minor, Channahon Minooka Rotary president said he hopes the event raises enough funds to give out four, $1,000 scholarships to graduating Minooka High School seniors in May. Last year’s profits of about $7,000 funded only two $1,000 scholarships, Minor said. Portions of the funds also provided dictionaries to every third-grader in the Channahon and Minooka Grade School Districts, as well as Student of the Month Awards at Minooka Community High School and awards to graduating eighth-graders at Channahon and Minooka Junior High, he said. The Rotary Club also …
